Thinkpad T30 and Windows XP....one problem

#1 Post by MadeInJapan » Sat Aug 21, 2004 9:00 pm

Hello all...I got my T30 in the mail this week and took data from my 600E's Win2000 pro and put it on my T30. One program I often use called FileProt just wouldn't work. I checked the site where I got it some time ago and it's suppose to work with WinXP, but somehow it created a memory stack dump and I had to use Safe Mode to get back into WinXP and get rid of it. It wouldn't let me uninstall it, so I had to just delete it and then use a program to cull the registery and clean up its aftermath.
When I did this, the round button on the system tray (the one that lets you expand and contract the program icons on the tray) disapeared. Does anyone know how to get this little round button back (it's blue, round and has 2 either white or yellow arrows on it...near the right side)?

Also, I really do need a program to hide folders and files, like FileProt. Does anyone know of such and where to download it?

thanks in Advance!
Dave

For that icon, left click over an empty area of the taskbar > select Properties > check the box "Hide inactive icons"

I'm not sure about a program like FileProt.

Clicking on the tray and using the "hide inactive icons" doesn't bring the button back for me. I think that some type of script is damaged. It's bad when you use an external drive or flash memory pen (USB) and you need to be able to access it on the tray to stop it before you unplug it and it isn't accessable there...hidden behind the invisible "button," I guess. Since the button isn't there, I can't navigate to it. Making the device "always visible" in the tray option also doesn't work.

I did a quick search on google for "hide inactive icons" missing. There are a lot of results, but I have no experience with that problem.

Thanks, everyone for trying to help me. My problem still persists. Can't find anything about the disappearing "button," although plenty of info on the disappearing icons. I just want my "button" back...think from there I can deal with the icons. As far as the folder/file hiding program, I can deal without it...I'm sure there's a way to password protect folders.

MadeInJapan, you said you cant see/use some of your icons because you cant unhide them (since that button is gone).
So, what happens if you uncheck the box "Hide inactive icons" and reboot? Do you then see all your icons? (I'm just curious ...)

Were you made in Japan? I spent three years in Sasebo:

humpa...born and raised there....work for Japanese school now...in East TN. Very weird. Know Sasebo very well...our high school (Canadian Academy) in Kobe, Japan used to play your high school team in basketball. By the way, I graduated from H.S. in 1978.

I've tried everything and no good on the tray/icon thing.

Finally called IBM support and they suggested I do the Drive Fitness Test, and it found corrupt sectors which it repaired, but they are concerned enough they are sending me a new Hard Drive and recovery discs. If you know the best choices to select during recovery, please let me know. I'm most concerned with whether I should or shouldn't leave the service partition. It seems I read somewhere that this is a choice I can select during the recovery process.
Thanks in advance,
Dave

I only spent 3 yrs in Sasebo, and most of that time I was on a ship. But we got out plenty. Sasebo is a beautiful little(?) port city - I miss sitting up on top of Look-Out point (that's what we called it?) and listening to/watching the city.
I also miss driving on the left - and the Walk/Don't Walk tunes. ;)

There is supposedly an option that asks if you want to restore the recovery partition, but I don't have the recovery cd's. I think everyone should use some sort of back-up system, though.
I saved the I386 and the IBMTOOLS folders just in case, and then I deleted the hidden partition and a bunch of the software. I also partitioned the drive. I like to have a Windows partition for just the OS, and then another one for all my stuff. I save backups on another pc. I use Ghost to backup my OS partition, and I use some scripts to backup all the files/folders from my partition.
You should do whatever you are comfortable with, though. The ibm stuff (Rescue and Recovery with Rapid Restore) is supposed to be very good.
