Memory parity error BSOD when resuming from sleep on battery

#1 Post by curiouscosy » Sun Sep 17, 2006 10:47 pm

Hi all,

My somewhat new T60 (2007-62U) started to exhibit funny behaviour a few days ago, especially after resuming from sleep when running on battery. It started with some screen corruption (e.g. some icons are displayed in the middle of the screen, randomly appearing bits and pieces of graphics that looked like part of an application, etc).

After reseating the memory module, the problem went away for a couple days. However, today the problem came back and become much worse than before. This time reseating/placing the memory module on a different slot doesn't help. Almost everytime the computer is resumed from sleep while on battery, a BSOD with the message "Parity Check/Memory Parity Error" would be displayed. Then the only option is to reboot. The funny thing is, I have never encountered this BSOD when the computer is plugged in, even when I followed the exact same steps that made the BSOD appear while running on battery.

I had to admit that the problem seems to have started when I brought the computer from one lab to another in school with one hand (screen closed, but it is still running, carried like carrying a book), could this be a problem with bad solder join that is exposed with the somewhat rough handling for a day? In the past I had carried it around only when it is safely placed in a laptop bag.

Thanks for reading, please reply if you have any information at all.

Nick.

I've no experience in the T60 series, but maybe some flexing could have cause your motherboard to act funky regarding the memory slots.

Do you have only 1 DIMM or 2?

I've only got 1 DIMM, but I've run memtest86 for 3+ cycles, and there's not a single error. I've also run the PC-Doctor tests (memory/system board/video) on loop mode (5-10 times), but all test passes just fine.

At first I thought about the flexing problem too, but the thing is, it also happens when the computer just sits ontop of a table, untouched (except for the power button to wake it out of sleep, of course).

doubtful that the walk from one lab to another caused anything to go "fitzztt"..

assuming you have not loaded any quirky software app, you most likely you have a bad memory part..

your T60 is under warranty..
call for help on this one..

or get a replacement memory part from lenovo..

or buy a good quality memory part as an eventual upgrade and swap them..

or find someone with another T60 and borrow the memory for a test..

Yup, I haven't load anything new/funny for a long time before the first sign of break down.

I've brought it to a IBM service centre, which fortunately is about 5 minutes from where I live. The technician agrees with me that it didn't look like a software problem, however he didn't think its the memory either, because of the fact that the BSOD only happens when the computer is running on battery.

He seems to think that either the battery may not be able to supply enough current when the computer is resuming or it is a system board problem.
