Differences in T41p vs T42p. Internal differences?

#1 Post by agarza » Mon Sep 18, 2006 12:37 am

Hi again.

Here I come with the CPU/GPU temperatures issues, on my 'T42p'.
Bought as a stock machine (sold to IBM employees at a low price), without serial number, without the sticker COA of Windows XP at the back of the unit, without the Intel Centrino sticker & without the ATi logo sticker at the left side of the palm rest.

I've learned by many users here in thinkpads.com forums that people that applied the compound Arctic Silver 5 have achieved to run a more quieter laptop with the CPU temps lowering some degrees off.

My Thinkpad, basing that it lacks a Serial Number or Model Type, I ran Everest, and checked that the motherboard serial is 2373-GEG, then, after googling it I found that model belongs to a T41p machine.

My machine came with 1GB of RAM (2x512 DIMM's), the FireGL T2 with 128MB.

After applying Arctic Silver 5, the CPU runs 52-54C all the time, doing normal stuff, while other people claim their CPU is 41-44C doing normal stuff. GPU is about 2-3C more hot than the CPU all the time. (Got this readings using Thinkpad T43 Fan Control v0.18 SVC

I run my processor at full steam (1.8GHz Pentium M 'Dothan') voltaging it @ 1.196V with NHC.

I've triple checked if the heatsink makes good contact with the CPU, and indeed yes, there's contact. But I can't account why the CPU runs soo hot.

Ironically, when I'm at full processing power (Gaming for a long time), the CPU gets about 64-67C max, and the GPU about 80C, decreasing rapidly.

/////////

I need to find answers as why my laptop runs very hot, as it's NEW:
1. why it have a T41p motherboard?
2. there's a difference in CPU socket, northbridge, southbridge, something that is different in the T42p compared to the T41p?
3. Does the fan has something to do? (Originally the laptop came with the FAN Short, and it was replaced for the LONG, known as the M24 model.
4. The LED's located on the cover of the screen (outside) doesn't light up (never lit up), I've checked internally but nothing seems to be wrong.

Any enlightening :?

Hi,

Don't worry too much. Your temps are absolutely normal (not hot at all). If you want to see what others claim as 'normal' temps of 45C or so, just set 'dynamic switching' mode so that your processor is normally running at 600Mhz (and much more undervolted than 1.196v at that speed). In my case I can decrease temps from 52c to around 44c doing this.
760CD -> 770X -> 600E -> T23 -> T40 -> T42 -> T400 -> T430

2373-GEG is _defenitely_ a T41p and not a T42p!!! I can say that because I have exactly this one. You may change your signature :roll:

I can also tell you that this is the "Austrian" version. It has an Austrian modem connector at one modem cable's end but the only difference to the German model.

The T42p should have at least the fingerprint sensor and never ones have a Dothan CPU.

Indeed, using IBM serial number detector, the warranty stated my equipment is from Austria.

So, maybe the T42/T43 run more quiet than the T41's ?

Another thingy:

///////

I've tried to lower the GPU clock speed, to reduce of course temperatures. But in NHC I can't get the software to detect and manage the Powerplay settings.

I did install the Omega Drivers or the modded 7500 driver from a user around here, but the screen of my laptop is flickering. I don't know how to explain it, but this is very annoying, despite the fact that now NHC can lower the GPU power.

Any thoughts on this?

////////////

I run NHC now in 'Dynamic Switching', Multiplier 18x is 1.196V, 6x Multiplier is 0.748V. I've not tested this values with Prime95, as I thing there's plenty of buffer to avoid the laptop to freeze.

CPU temp is 46C now, but GPU 51C. I could just wish to run with a underclocked GPU.
