Clean install of XP on T60 - HD not being detected!

#1 Post by amaru96 » Mon Sep 18, 2006 2:13 am

Hey guys, I just got an IBM T60 which has been formatted clean (no recovery partition) and I'm trying to install XP from the install CD. However I don't get very far, the first screen loads up where you choose to install, repair or exit. I press enter to install and the next screen says "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer".

I assume this is because the HD is a SATA drive and XP doesn't detect it - how do I know install the OS on this laptop?

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

hmm..
should not be related to whether the HDD is SATA or PATA..

i have never experienced this problem..

did you reformat the HDD..?
or is it blank..?

i am assuming that you made the recovery CD set BEFORE you blasted away the drive contents..

regardless, you can not load JUST WinXP, clean, willingly, from the recovery CD's..
it WILL load a generic version of XP but it will want to continue on and run a long command file that configuers the T60 with the correct drivers and utilities for the T60 it sees..
the recovery is intended to restore the T60 to a factory preload..

well, make sure the HDD has some sort of file system on it that windows will recognize..
and try again..

IF you are trying to load XP from an XP CD, which version is it..?

When I received the laptop I did 2 things. Took a copy of all the drivers installed using DriverGenius and took an image using Ghost.

I then used partition magic to wipe all partitions and create 1 large FAT32 partition - thinking I could conver it to NTFS later.

I then booted from my XP SP1 CD to do a clean install of XP but got that "unable to detect a hard drive" error.

I tried restoring the Ghost image using the ghost boot CD but it also didn't detect the HD so I couldn't restore it. I then tried Acronis True-Image and it does detect the HD but of course it won't read the Ghost image to restore from.

So it does appear to be a problem with detecting the SATA drive.

Found the problem!

In the BIOS setting of the SATA drive it was set to AHCI mode, I change it to "Compatibility" and XP can now detect it.

Well I'm off to start installing XP......

Hi.
The reason for this behavior is that XP doesnt support the SATA drive. You can add it by typing F6 (i think) during the install process to add 3rd party hardware support like scsi disks and so on. Alternativly you can change to compatability mode, do a clean install, change back to SATA mode, and let windows detect the new hardware. You will need the intel drivers, which you can download from the Lenovo webpage.

Hope this helps.

Yep, took me a while but I managed to figure it out.

The problem with pressing F6 during the install process is it asks for the driver on a floppy disk and the Tx model laptops don't have floppy drives. I do have a USB floppy drive but of course XP doesn't detect it during the install phase.

I've installed XP and configured it and changed it back to SATA mode in the BIOS but XP blue-screens during the bootup!

same issue at my side:
- Able to make XP installation in compatibility mode
- Smooth installation
- but after switching back to S-ATA mode it is bluescreened :?

Any ideas? Is there an "F6" 3rd party driver somewhere?

I did it in another way, I integrated the sata driver into my xp cd with the program called nlite, works like a charm ;)

So what should I do after pressing F6 and have people successfully reinstalled a clean version of windows on their T60s?

Thanks!

Simply do what the IBM document above says: Select BIOS Sata Mode to Compatibility, then restart, then install windows XP normally. Download the driver in the document, and execute the .CMD file, shutdown your machine. Then power it up and set BIOS Mode to AHCI and then let Windows XP recognize the new hardware and then point to the location where you extracted the SATA driver.
Restart and that's it

Hi. I've just bought a Z61p but the OS is in Korean. I have an English Windows that I want to install but had the same prooblem as the OP - "setup didn't find any hard drives"

I've been trawling the internet for a few days looking for a solution until I found this form.

Before I try the steps suggested, what do I need to back-up? The computer only has factory installed stuff so no personal files need to be installed. I've downloaded about 50 drivers & softwarea from the IBM website and copied them to disk.

I've noticed there's a lot of other stuff pre-installed on my computer, so anything else (folders and such) I should copy before I wipe everything?

Thanks.
