I have now tried Zone Alarm Security suite and F-Secure anti-virus and F-Secure security suites. All three appear to conflict with the IBM Thinkvantage utilities on my X60s and all cases create slow downs or out right delays in the computer operations.
I would like to see if there are any suggestions to solve the problems through some set up change.
The second question is which anti-virus tool are you using and are you happy with the performance?
I hope to avoid a reformat and install of this computer.

I use symantec AV (corporate edition). It's necessary to turn off the "tamper protection" feature, since it interferes with the "whisper mode" feature of ThinkVantage Away Manager, causing symantec to generate many megabytes of log files, severely thrashing the hard drive, slowing the system down, and making the battery life much worse. Possibly you could also solve it by switching off "whisper mode" in the Away Manager configuration -- I didn't try.
I think the problem is that to implement "whisper mode", the away manager holds a handle to the antivirus program, which it uses in order to temporarily suspend the scans. The tamper protection feature of symantec doesn't like any other process holding a handle to it becuase that's the kind of thing a virus would try to use to tamper with the antivirus. Why it just sits there filling up the disk with hundreds of log messages per second, rather than informing the user of this problem, well that's bad design....
Hope that helps,
Lev

I also had an enormous problem with Away Manager and Symantic Corporate AV.
My X60s came with Away Manager set to defrag the disk and run Rescue and Recovery. The result, as with Lev were AV log files >300 MBytes/day, almost constant activity of Rtvscan.exe and ccEvtMngr.exe (in Task Mngr) and almost constant disk activity. The computer was pretty non-responsive. It's outrageous for Lenovo to implement these Away Manager tasks and whisper mode by default. I deleted Away Manager and all problems went with it.
