Advanced power management on Z60m

I recently received my new z60m 2531 mtu which i ordered from the Lenovo site via a sales rep over the phone. I took advantage of the Lenovo outlet sale and what a bargain! I couldn't justify the $700 more for the dual core processor and X1600 graphics card.

I have to say though that the experience was not as smooth as it could have been. Being here in France it was necessary for the machine to be shipped on the stated shipping date. I found that there was a lack of communication between the sales rep, the factory, and communicating it to the client. What turned out to be a possible "sorry but we can't fulfill your order, how about moving up to a Z61m instead," to arriving absolutely on time was stressing to say the least.

In any case I'm very pleased with the machine and find it top notch in terms of build, fit and finish. I currently own a A22m that has been a relatively dependable machine over the past 5 years. My only gripe for the moment is that win xp did not report the 2Ghz speed (PM760) that it was claimed to be. Even after disabling the speed step in the thinkvantage advanced power manager settings it was stuck at 797Mhz. When i checked in systems info which should indicate the maximum processor speed, it also indicates 797Mhz.

What gives? After disabling and rebooting, the machine doesn't want to reboot but freezes. I'm forced several times to hold down the power button to force a shutdown then restart. This went on 4-5 times then it went into a loud beeping mode. Again i had to force a shut down. Whatever happened it seems to have kicked knocked the setting in effect and now at the maximum performance setting i am seeing 2ghz. However once in a while even at the maximum power setting it goes back to 797mhz. At least i can reboot sans problem.

I noticed on the ibm website there is a newer bios 1.19 vs the default 1.14. Is this the reason why I'm having this problem? Has anyone else had this problem?

Make sure you have your computer in the right power mode. I use the mode called "Optimize Power Source" - So, when it's plugged in, it's running full power, and when it's not, it's running @ 786 Mhz.

Thanks for the help, but in fact a bios upgrade and other drivers were necessary to correct this problem. After the upgrade it seems to work fine. Why would lenovo ship a machine that didnt have the lates bios and drivers?????

It has been ever thus. I don't think I have ever got a computer or piece of software that was up-to-date out of the box. That doesn't mean they didn't work, merely that reaching for updates first thing is a necessary step occasionally. ... JD Hurst
