Thinkpads getting worse since the late 1990s?

It's funny because I still remember how expensive computers were back in the 1990s and how now, even with inflation in the equation computers of today are still fractions cheaper yet we still complain about the prices.

Man, I remember those prices. A new 701 was $4500, some of the early 7-series topped 5 grand. Heck, the TransNote was released in 2001 and the MSRP was $3099! (I'm in the early stages of creating a web site about the t-note, and I think the price was a large factor in its failure). You won't hear me complaining about modern prices, with brand new models coming under $1000 these days...

Maybe the more apt question isnt the quality of the thinkpad as it comes new in box from the ODM to Lenovo the distributor.

But more so, the quality of service that Lenovo and its subcontractors have been providing since the buy out.

Well, for those of us who buy used Thinkpads that are no longer under warranty, the quality of service is irrelevant. Of the 18 Thinkpads that I have owned, only one was purchased with warranty.

while its been a very very long time since I saw it, the IBM PS/2 Note was definatly a nice solid sturdy notebook. My 350 was flimsy in comparison, and that was a tank compared to my t21 and t42p

mind you, since a nice guy from IBM service came and replaced the keyboard, i think the t42p is feeling more solid again too - so maybe the screws just need tightening


every year i worry that the service is going to be worse though, as each year, the service techs seem to be a year younger - its been ages since i had a tech by that had seen a 350.

My first ThinkPad was a 350c and while the case was for the most part pretty nice and the keyboard unbeatable, the hinges were a real weak point.
