Managing Icons

I'm starting to install stuff on my new T42p and am having problems aligning icons. I like to arrange my icons in my own peculiar way and when I move icons and align them up vertically they overlap - it seems there is a pre-programed space/place for icons and if they are too tall which most are, they overlap each other. Is there a way to increase the vertical space between icons? :?

Sure, go to Display in Control Panel -> Appearance tab -> Advanced and adjust the Icon Spacing (there is a horizontal and vertical setting).
