770Z Test Errors - Display error - DEV 053 ERR 92 FRU 0042
770Z Test Errors - Display error - DEV 053 ERR 92 FRU 0042
I'm trying to track down an error I get when I run tests on my 770Z, which has been upgraded to a PIII 500MHz. Hopefully, someone else with an 8MB video 770Z upgraded to a PIII can confirm that they get this same error.
Can someone with an 8MB video model 770Z and with the DEVA card installed run the built-in BIOS test for the Display and let me know if you get the same error as I do?
The error occurs under the Display section when I run the built-in battery of tests available through the BIOS:
DEV 053
ERR 92
FRU 0042
From my testing, I have discovered that the error does not appear when the DEVA card is pulled out of the machine. And when I take that same DEVA card and install it in a 770E and run the same built-in BIOS tests, the 770E Display test comes back "OK". On my machine you can visually see the error occur at the very end of the 770Z display test -- it appears to happen while testing some kind of 3D/overlay functions, and the display will freeze at the exact same place each time while in the process of moving various graphical objects around.
FRU 0042 indicates that the tests suspect the FRU 42 as the culprit. The HMM says FRU 42 = "Video card or system board (video)". I just finished replacing the motherboard on my 770Z in order to get rid of a series of other errors. I decided to replace the 8MB video card as well, based on the remaining error, but this replacement does not appear to have had any effect on any errors or functions (i.e. the original 8MB board was probably good). Here is some additional info about the errors I've already gotten rid of or tracked down:
770Z Test Errors - Systemboard? Or result of CPU upgrade?
My suspicion is that some part of the built-in BIOS Display test connected to confirming DEVA operation of MPEG/overlay functions tries to access onboard memory and/or CPU registers that are no longer available after you upgrade to a PIII (and change the memory/bus speed). I'm somewhat curious if this error is unique to the 8MB video model or not, but regardless, if no one else gets this error, then it may be that my DEVA card and/or memory has a problem that I should try to track down.
Thanks for any input,
Phil.

Phil,
I don't have my 770Z now ( it is at the office ) but i will perform the test tomorrow.
I am not sure if my 770Z came with the DEVA card because it came with CD rom instead of DVD rom will check that too tomorrow.

OK i am back!
I did the battery of tests from the BIOS and the results for the lcd were ok.
Bellow is a link for a picture i took of the screen.

The only thing that did not pass was the memory here is another link with a picture of the screen there you can see the codes:

I hope this helps.
Note: i have a 650mhz PIII instaled but it is running at 500mhz.

Thanks, cmarti! Did you notice if you have the DEVA card installed or not? If you have the DEVA card installed, then your 770Z will have three very small plug receptacles visible on the left side of the machine, below the battery. If you do not have the DEVA card installed, then there will simply be a blank piece of plastic there instead.cmarti wrote:I am not sure if my 770Z came with the DEVA card because it came with CD rom instead of DVD rom will check that too tomorrow.

Those memory errors are from installing 256MB memory modules I think. If you pull your extra memory out so you have only your base memory left, then this error should go away with a new test.cmarti wrote:The only thing that did not pass was the memory here is another link with a picture of the screen there you can see the codes:

I check from what you said and no i do not have a DEVA card installed.
Which benefits will i have if i install one?
Thanks.

The DEVA card provides better DVD playback by adding a dedicated MPEG 2 decompressor. DEVA = DVD and Enhanced Video Adapter. Also, it provides video out ports that allow you to attach your laptop to a TV --- for e.g., to watch DVD's on a hotel/guest room TV or to do presentations on a large TV/projector. And with the right software, you can do video captures through one of the ports.cmarti wrote:I check from what you said and no i do not have a DEVA card installed.

Most people find that DVD playback is just fine on a 770Z without the DEVA card, so really the main benefit is the new input/output ports.
Until/Unless I hear from someone with a DEVA card installed, I'm going to proceed on the assumption that my 770Z Display test error does not indicate a problem with any of my hardware, but is just a side effect of the CPU upgrade.

I will check if i can find someone that is selling one so i can run the test with it installed. And also see the difference in performance.pkiff wrote: Until/Unless I hear from someone with a DEVA card installed, I'm going to proceed on the assumption that my 770Z Display test error does not indicate a problem with any of my hardware, but is just a side effect of the CPU upgrade.

There are two types of DEVA Cards in the market: one for the 770e (and some other) and one for the 770x/z. Each can only be used in the specific model although it can be plugged in in all. Maybe that is the cause of your problem?! The fact that your DEVA works in your 770e might be an evidence for this...

Thanks pomdas. My DEVA has the part number that is supposed to be compatible with the 770X/Z: FRU 12J0411. I think this version of the DEVA card is backwards compatible with the 770E/ED, but the older version that was designed for the 770E/ED is not compatible with the 770X/Z.
I think that the DEVA is actually working correctly as far as I can tell -- my DVD's play quite smoothly and my CPU load during playback is only 25-40% or something. So what I'm trying to figure out is if I can just ignore the error message that the BIOS test produces since everything else seems to be okay.

Hmm, it might be interesting to know if the problem is caused by the higher front-side-bus caused by the CPU update?! I could imagine that this frequency is connected to the DEVA. Maybe your DEVA is not working and your ability to play DVDs is caused by the better CPU? Would be interesting to know if the smotth play is still there, when you remove your DEVA...

Good point.
Phil,
Did you run the test without the DEVA card installed?
That would be good.

Carlos.
I install the DEVA card with all the required IBM drivers, run the test and there were only one error the same as before the memory error.
Here is a link for a picture of the screen from last night after running all the bios test:

Mmmm...Grrrrr...I don't know what to do.
I guess that means that my DEVA card has some kind of fault in it: I've replaced the system board and video card already, without being able to get rid of the error, so the last possible culprit I think must be the DEVA card. And yet I was playing DVDs with it, so it doesn't make sense. I'm going to do a memtest on the motherboard memory next, and then do a system reset to get the BIOS back to its original state and test again that way. But I'm running out of ideas, and I'm suspicious that maybe getting a new DEVA card won't make the error go away either....

Problem solved!
After using the "Reset" button, the Display test ran correctly to completion and it now indicates that the Display is OK. What a relief! I re-edited the CMOS/BIOS to get rid of the 127 error caused by my PIII, and then re-ran the Display test and it again came back OK.
I'm guessing now that replacing my video card and system board probably did fix the problem, but that the BIOS needed to be reset to get rid of some kind of internal record of the error and/or some kind of incorrect setting caused by the error. Can't say for sure.
Thanks to cmarti for assisting with the troubleshooting -- much appreciated.
