Trackpoint cap touching screen

#1 Post by atb12688 » Fri Sep 22, 2006 1:12 pm

Its not noticeable and i don't think its hurting the screen but if the screen is off and seen at the right angle, theres a little ring that can be wiped off. I switched from the soft-dome to the soft-rim and its just freaking me out a bit because i don't want to damage the screen. Perhaps theres a better method where i could put the cap into the keyboard a little further or something so that it would not do this. Any help is appreciated!

EDIT: This of course occurs when i close the lid and open it back up

Some people place a thin cloth (I am sure they will post and say what it is) over the keyboard before they close the lid. That will protect the screen and is a good idea.

Some people (like me) ignore the situation and, while we can see the trackpoint image lightly on the screen, there appears to be no permanent damage. My T41 is 32 months old and the mark has been there for years.

On my x40, I get the trackpoint mark. On the x60, not so much.

It does not damage the screen unless you are eating something, use the trackpoint and leave crumbs that stick out in the trackpoint grooves (or on top of the trackpoint). Even then, it does not really dmg the screen.

I'm one of those people who are anal about this, and also want extra protection against bumps, so I use a piece of microfiber cloth (which is also good for cleaning the screen). You can buy this in various places, including ShaggyMac: http://www.shaggymac.com/index.php?main ... &cPath=3_5 (a little overpriced, but I was using my employer's money so I didn't care). It seems to do a good job.

What I'm actually more concerned about, rather than the trackpoint tip, is anything that might get trapped in the keyboard and shake out . The cloth creates a barrier against detritus from under/between the keys.

System shouldn't be touching the screen this way...is the keyboard all the way down?

Call 800-IBM SERV...there is something wrong here...

I disagree. The screen has not been damaged and i see no reason to call support... I don't care about the mark anymore...

I would like to reiterate: The original soft-dome that lenovo installed never made the mark. It was only when i installed the soft rim myself that it began making the mark. Its only noticeable when the screen is off and when held at just the right angle. I don't care. As far as i'm concerned, its just the same as a dead pixel...

Are you sure that you have installed the soft rim correctly and have forced it all the way down onto the stub?

Also, have you checked to make sure there exist no debris underneath the cap that prevents it from going all the way down onto the stub?

I've read about this issue in the past. Do a Search on this site using the words microfiber & trackpoint, and check the box Search for all terms. I pulled up 8 threads on this.

Given this thread, and then your other thread regarding flexing in the volume control button area, it might be worth checking to see if the keyboard screws are tight.

Regardless which Thinkpad trackpoint cap you use, it shouldn't touch the screen...without there being undue pressure on the backside of the LCD while it is closed.

I would suggest taking a look at the Hardware Maintenance Manual, and scroll down to the keyboard removal instructions, so that you can see where the keyboard screws are, and just see if they need tightening.

I see the screen touching the trackpoint on the thinner T's. If something is wrong, based on experience and all the posts, it would be the design. ... JD Hurst

The keyboard is all the way down thats not the issue. There are no screws loose. The volume strip flexes its just part of the design i guess. I think the trackpoint cap is all the way down but of course it is sort of hard to tell. I think the design simply didn't leave any room. Its not damaging the screen or affecting my daily usage so i have no reason to care. If i push the cap anymore, it goes into the G-key. As far as i'm concerned, many people have encountered this issue and moved on from it. I really don't care anymore...

I've had three thinkpads and the soft-rim trackpoint always seems to stick up enough to tough the screen (the other two should be fine). Eventually it did leave a permanent mark on my screens although didn't actually cause any damage. Like has been said, nothing to worry about.

I find dead pixels more difficult to ignore than the trackpoint mark, which I only notice when I look really closely. In other words, the trackpoint mark doesn't bother me at all.

I belive having experienced the same thing that the trackpoint cap with the concave center and elevated outer rim must be just slightly taller as it's the only one that contacts the display with the lid shut.

I got a keyboard cover designed for a 12" powerbook and that solved the issue completely.
