anyone have experience with the ThinkPad 2nd HDD 62P4554?

#1 Post by fox_napier » Sun Aug 22, 2004 11:13 pm

Has anyone tried the ThinkPad 2nd HDD Adapter for Ultrabay Slim on their T42/p? Any technical problems? Are you able to choose the Ultrabay Slim HDD as the boot drive?

I want to run linux but don't want to resort to a dual boot. The only lacking element, if I run linux from the Ultrabay Slim, is that I won't have a DVD-ROM drive. I can live with that. My only other worry is if I accidentally eject the Ultrabay Slim while the HDD in it is still being used...

Also, do any of you out there have one for the T42 that you're not using and are willing to part with, model 62P4554?

I might be wrong, but I believe that if you order the ultrabay slim adapter as a spare part the price is significantly lower than buying it as an accessory. You might want to check that before buying.

I have the ultrabay slim adapter. I havent tried booting from it, but it is listed in the bios boot order.
I'm not too thrilled with the fit, though. The cdrw/dvd combo drive slides in and out very nicely, but the hdd adapter/drive scrapes when inserting/removing.

If you accidently hit the release button for the ultrabay, I think the harddrive would be disabled (that's what mine does) - which wouldn't be good. ;)
... it's not all that easy to move that slider by accident, though.

I believe you can also screw the ultrabay slim drives/adapters into the computer to preclude accidental removal.

yes, I forgot about that. DOH!
There is a threaded hole that will stop the slider switch from moving if there is a screw in it. :)

I don't understand your distinction between "spare part" and "accessory". How do you order it as a spare part, rather than an accessory? I only know of calling up IBM and asking to purchase it.

Also, is there anyone one here willing to sell me their 2nd HDD adapter?

Great! So, I'm trying to install Gentoo. How would I go about this if I use the 2nd HDD adapter and thus don't have a CD drive to install the LiveCD from? USB Zip drive?

fox_napier, you could just leave the cd drive in the ultrabay and swap out hdd's and do the install ... and then put the original hdd back, and the new one in the ultrabay

This is true and I thought about this. However I am scarred by an experience where I did this on a friend's T23 and it got horribly out of hand. I will leave this as an option, but I'm wondering if linux distros with treat the HD any differently on the Ultrabay Slim's IDE channel after being installed via the regular HD IDE channel.

I was wondering that too. But on my x21, I used to put my main hdd in my ultrabay, change the boot order, and it would boot fine.
I figure if it works with windows, then...

You shouldn't be able to do any harm - you won't be affecting the main hdd at all, right? It won't even be in the machine.
