How big is your C: IBM Preload Partition and files?

#1 Post by Zen » Sun Sep 24, 2006 6:11 pm

After reading what many have done to set up their Z60's, I've decided to delete the recovery partition to recover : ) the 5Gb's. I just created the recovery cd's/dvd which wasn't too difficult.

I'm not sure when I booted the machine for the first time but when looking at my so far single C: partition, all the preloaded XP, software, thinkvantage soft totals 13.8GB!!!! When i click on each folder and tally everthing up i count only about 5 or 6 gigs max. How does xp report almost 14Gb's used?

I know that XP is uses more space than win2k and the thinkvantage software is that bloated but what gives? I wouldnt think that the 5Gb partition would be counted here could it? The properties of my 100Gb disk indicates a 94,058,463,232 byte capacity with 87.5 Gb. I would think the 5GB is outside this capacity. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Thanks for the info. After reading the 2 threads, it seems that it could be the rescue and recovery software creating or storing backups on the C: somewhere.

Will investigate when i get back home. If this is the case how can I disable or delete this. Does the winXP restore play a part in this used hidden space as well?

Thanks

The Preload on my machine is 27 Mb and IBM Tools is 640 Mb. That's a long way from bloat, so in addition to backups, it may be programs you have installed. System Restore is set for 12 percent of your hard drive by default, and that can account for space used as well. ... JD Hurst

27MB?? Do you mean GB?

The biggest folders on my C: are

I386 473 MB

IBM Tools 1.51GB

Program files 3.04GB (stock configuration, the only thing i installed
is firefox the rest is factory!!!) IBMThinkvantage
seems to be the biggest culprit at almost
600MB, but where is the other 2 odd gigs of info
stored??

WINDOWS 1.67 GB

Ok all that totals maybe 7 GB at best, and i cant even account for the 3GB on program files as nothing was installed!! I've looked and their are no hidden files that account for the space used neither.

And yet the properties of C: IBM PRELOAD total 13.8GB. Free space 73.GB of a total capacity 87.5GB hard disk.

So if I asume there is 5 GB for the hidden partition that would mean i have a 92GB usable hard disk from a 100GB drive. 8GB of space for formatting an NTFS drive??

I'm a bit perplexed...........................

You read those threads that GomJabbar pointed you to, right?
How much space did you get back when you turned off System Restore?
Or did you not try that yet? .... System Properties > System Restore
X21 (upgrade: 384MB ram 60GB 7200rpm)
T42 2378-DXU (upgrade: 1.5GB ram 60GB 7200rpm)
Z60m 2531-MTU (upgrade: 2GB ram)

Nope havent tried that yet. In fact I didnt even activate it. I'm in the middle of a reinstall! I called IBM support and the tech said indeed kind of strange.

At first he tried to explain that the 5.5GB hidden partition was accounted for in the C: Even still doesnt really make sense to me. After looking at disk manager its clear that its not part of the C:

He pulled out a new T60 and had a look and the preloaded C: was only 7GB. The Z60 should not be more than that and yet I show almost double that 13.8GB. He suggests that I do a recovery from cd to original factory install.

I'm curious as well to know for those who have deleted the 5.5GB hidden partition if indeed it reduces used space or increases available space.

System Restore is activated by default.

I have System Restore disabled and have removed the hidden partition and did a clean install of XP Pro.

Windows reports my drive as having the following capacity:
100,027,080,704 bytes 93GB

Partition Magic shows the capacity as: 95.393GB

EDIT: Acronis shows my drive as 93.16GB
X21 (upgrade: 384MB ram 60GB 7200rpm)
T42 2378-DXU (upgrade: 1.5GB ram 60GB 7200rpm)
Z60m 2531-MTU (upgrade: 2GB ram)
