Change an IBM a/b/g to work with Super G?

#1 Post by clmbngbkng » Mon Aug 23, 2004 12:49 pm

I have a 2373KTU and I was just wondering if you could change the IBM a/b/g card to work with Super G at the faster speed without adding a new card.

I know that Super G is just transmitting on more than one channel so would this just be a firmware update or am I just hoping for the impossible?

G is fine for me when I'm using it I was just wondering if it was possible. Besides right now I don't even have wireless in my house but I do have about 6 neighbors living around me that I can mooch off of and they are none the wiser about it. :D

the ibm a/b/g minipci is working with super g..

but a hassle to get this work properly...

i got it work once while installing different atheros drivers (official/beta).
don't know how but i got the 108mbit connection with my wgt624 superg 108mbit mode only router....

some netiq chariot tests later i was getting quite good results: 40-55 Mbit transfers w/o problems .... afterwards i tried to re-install the drivers and three days later i gave up and restored everything to factory default .... dunno how i got this thing work ... maybe there'll be a driverupgrade with superg feature provided by ibm ...

the atheros drivers doesnt function - error: cant start the device code 10.
but the atheros client util is working properly with the ibm drivers ...

newer atheros minipcis (5004X/5005X) will work @ 60mbit ....

the a/b/g ibm minipci got this AR5212 chip.... aka 5001X - atheros has made some upgrades - currently offering 5005X chipsets with more performance and features ... (range/transfer/powersaving)

no state of the art wireless chipset ...

i would go for a WRT54G Linksys with more range und still enough bandwidth - and opensource thirdparty firmware! :P

keep in mind: ibm got that blacklist/whitelist for minipcis and if you appreciate the 3 year warranty dont modify it and keep all things
and wait for the official driver support.

Well it sounds like you can use it.

I found a post that seems to have already covered where I wanted to go with this. http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... ght=superg

From reading it you might need to load some drivers, and do a dance here and there but it seems possible.

Just Uninstall Access Connections!

#6 Post by dagordon » Mon Aug 23, 2004 8:37 pm

It's actually quite simple to get Super G working with the a/b/g card. Just uninstall Access Connections completely and let Windows do the wireless config. The IBM driver seems to support Super G, but having Access Connections installed - even if it's not doing the wireless configuration -- disables it.

In fact, having Access Connections installed seems to disable 802.11g mode entirely if no Location Profile has been created! Creating a Location Profile allows 54 Mbps, but Super G will still be disabled.

Take care,
David
