T60P with 15" UXGA ALL GOING AWAY

#1 Post by kjjb0204 » Wed Sep 27, 2006 4:29 pm

Can't say how I know, but if you want a T60P with the 15" UXGA and can find someone with stock, buy them now, because they are all being discontinued by Lenovo. Don't believe me? Check out Lenovo's website now and try to configure a 15" T60P. Can't do it, they only show 14.1 now for the T60P. It was nice while it lasted.....no other manufacturer offers it either. Every other product is either a 15.4 wide or SXGA.

Sorry, what I meant was that no other notebook manufacturer makes a 15"UXGA. All of their UXGA screens are actually wide 15.4 WUXGA, so Lenovo sort of had a unique product with the 15" UXGA T60P. No plans for Lenovo to introduce a wide T60..that's saved for the crappy Z series.

pianowizard - Lenovo already has a 15.4 wide with centrino duo - the Z61M

maximus - the planar supplier of the 15" UXGA screens has ceased production and lenovo will not have any more. As of today, no more of these are or will be available.

Glad I received mine on Monday. Talked to Lenovo and they told me that they were simply backordered until mid-late October. I suppose if they did indeed get notice that their backorder will not be filled, some people with pending orders will get notified and have their orders cancelled...

There was a thread (last week?) about Lenovo's plan to introduce widescreen models to the T series. I plan to buy a top-of-the-line T-series laptop in about a year, and will certainly try to get one of the widescreen ones.

Rumor != shipping product

Even though there has been a rumor about a possible widescreen T-series, and even if Lenovo indeed has one in some stage of development, that does not mean that it will ever see the light of day. Products get killed off before release all the time.

If it is true that the 1600x1200 15" panels are no longer being made, that is sad indeed. I guess the next closest thing would be a Z61p with a 15" widescreen 1900x1200 screen. Glad I got my 15" T60p already. Hate to think of what will happen if I ever need my LCD replaced...

I seldom read through an entire thread carefully and so I didn't realize that's just a rumor. Thanks for the clarification.

IBM/Lenovo have frequently in the past removed items from the availablity list on the website once backorders for a given component(s) reached a certain level. I was told that this was to maintain manageable backorder levels. As soon as there is availablilty and the b/o levels drop to a trigger point the item will be listed again.

I've seen this in the past applied to everything from whole system part numbers to DVD-R combo drives when they first came out.

It's also possible that they're qualifying a new supplier or shifting the balance of orders to another.

Just my 2 cents.
T'Pad 600e, 770x, A20p, A21p, A30p, A31p (2653-H3U), T43p (2668-Q2U) & T60p (2623-DDU)...it's an addiction.

If it's true, it's the end of an era.

Maybe Lenovo will come out with a 14" IPS screen to replace it.

Ummm...this is not correct...

The last order date for 15" UXGA T60p's is July 2007 for many models

Lenovo sells most of the T60p line through the authorized dealer channel to large companies...and keeps very little to sell online themselves, at this point. They are expensive displays/systems, and don't move quickly for online sales to individuals.

You want to see an example of this? Click on this link to a company like CDW...see how many T60p's are offered:

I have been waiting for a while to buy a 15 inch Thinkpad because I want a 1600*1200 laptop to replace my current 15 inch Sagar which is slowly falling apart

I wanted to wait for the Core2 Duo chip and maybe a slightly better graphics card then the 5200 but if there isnt going to be a 15" T61P then there is no point. I understand that I can find the current ones through places like Euclid or CDW but the concern I have is are there only going to be 14" 4*3 screens going forward ? Is there anyone connected enough to whoever is making these things to answer this question ? I just really want to know if the T61P is going to have a 4*3 15" screen as an option, because that is what I have been waiting for.

The reason I am concerned is because there isnt any other company making 15 inch laptops anymore. They are all 15.4 wide screen and I dont buy a laptop to watch Dvds on it so I would much rather have the 4*3 ratio.

Anyway if anyone can find out for certain if there will be a 15" 4*3 T61P I would much appreciate it.

Icefang...you will want a 2007-9JU. Announce...10/17....but actual ship date....don't know...look for it after the 17th

It will have the specs you want. 1600x1200 displays are expensive, however.

Altough I dont have any sources to support this, I seriously doubt that they will skip the 1600x1200 panel. Especially that resolution is mostly used by professionals (CAD, graphic design) and not consumers. Today, with all the millions of laptop brands, the Thinkpad needs to stand out, 1600x1200 is absolutely rare on notebooks, thus it would mean Thinkpads lose a valuble quality it has over other notebooks.

If they are going to cancel it, I will seriously think twice of getting another thinkpad, cuz I cannot live without my 1600x1200 resolution anymore.

Ok, like I said when I started the thread, I can't say how I know, but I can assure you all stock on the T60P 15" is gone and will not be going forward, unless Lenovo can find an alternate supplier of the screens besides planar. Problem is that since Lenovo is the only one with that screen, planar is the only supplier.

CDW buys direct from Lenovo, so if they have stock, they bought up last month's supply and won't be getting any more.

JohnDrake - I'm part of that authorized dealer channel and I can tell you that all major distributor's orders to Lenovo for the T60P with 15" have been cancelled, and all resellers are now being notified that their backorders will not be filled.

I just called Lenovo now to checkup on my order and the sales rep confirmed the T60p was to be discontinued.

I hope this is a precursor to the T61P with the Core 2 duo. If they aren't going to have 1600X1200 or 1920X1200 models I'm going to have to change vendors as I absolutely need either of those resolutions.

If the original poster is correct and the 15" 1600x1200 panel will no longer be made, the problem is that switching laptop brands won't help, since no one will have a 15" 1600x1200 panel. Hopefully there'll still be 15.4" 1900x1200 panels, but some of us prefer 4x3 instead of widescreen.

I'm fine with 1920X1200 in a real business laptop not a multimedia based machine. HP and Dell have a few but I hate the quality of their machines.

If there is demand supply will follow, its rule of economics. Lets wait and see. I recon all users of 1600x1200 must demand Lenovo to continue tradition.

If it is true, it will be absolutely ridiculous.

What about warrant? I just bought my T60p, and should have warranty on the whole machine (thus, also the screen) until 2009. So what if it breaks down, and I want to use my warranty? I will get a lower resolution screen, which I, most definitely, dont want.

This information really pisses me off. I will certainly contact Lenovo about this. I paid almost 3000 dollar for this machine, so I would be certain that I have good service, and that there wouldnt be a problem with replacement parts.

Good point on the warranty issue. So does Lenovo have a stock of these monitors? This issue has me p!ssed I waited hoping for a Core 2 Duo T6x with 1600x1200 or 1920x1200. If I can't get either I'm jumping ship from Lenovo. I'm been a IBM guy since i was 8 years old as my dad worked there but if the direction is away from true business machines to the garbage that is sold by Dell I'm leaving on principal alone.

Between IBM and Lenovo, they should have a lot of those screens in use. Perhaps if your ThinkPad breaks down someone in Lenovo gets a new laptop in exchange for his old T60p, which provides a donor screen for yours.

While I don't have any "inside information", I would be fairly certain that Lenovo would carry a stock for warranty replacements, and even for customers out of warranty. However, I would not be surprised that as the stock becomes diminished, the price for purchase outside of warranty becomes quite expensive.

Ok well I am even more confused now so I will just add in another question. If 15" T60P's are soon to be extinct to be replaced by 15.4" models, what is the difference between the Z61P and the new T60P with a 15.4" inch screen ? There is a high end Z61P model which looks like a T60P with a 15.4 inch screen. It has a 1920 * 1200 screen and the ATI 5200 gl card. Is this basically what they are moving to ? The only real difference I see on it is that it has a 1 year warrenty instead of a 3 year one but are there other differences ?
