T43P also humming under the right palmrest?

#1 Post by thinkweird » Thu Sep 28, 2006 7:30 pm

Apart from the noise came from the fan on the left side, I also noticed a noise coming under the right palm rest.

Do they have another fan under the palm rest? Or it is presumably the noise from hard drive?

I am pretty sure that there is no hard drive activity.

Does anyone have any idea?

• Considering a T530 or X230T now

Maybe, do you have your cell phone near your lappy?

There is no cell phone beside my laptop and this machine continues to whirring all the time. I use tp-fan control to turn off the fan and I can still here this humming sound.

If it is from the hard drive (although I didn't notice any read/write activity going on), how to make it quiet?

If it is not, what is the source of this noise-maker?

Make sure the noise on your HDD is set to Quiet.
You could use NHC to adjust that level, maybe it's adjusted for max performance.

Check if it's your HDD.

I had the same problem with this guy:

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... fbcd21fd93

Both of us have the same hard drive Toshiba 80G and exactly the whirring sound from the right palm.

The option in NHC called Acoustic Control can't be enabled. Any other way to change the hard drive noise?

Is your machine under warranty? You can contact IBM i am sure they will provide a replacement for the drive.

If not from the five laptops i own.

Sony-PCG-FX340 80GB 4,200rpm 4mb cache
Dell CPXJ-650GT-Toshiba 50GB 7,200rpm 16mb cache
IBM T40 samsung 80GB 5,400rpm 8mb cache
IBM 600X 7K100 100GB 7,200rpm 8mb cache
IBM 770Z Fujitsu 80GB 5,400 8mb cache

The most quiet are the samsung and the fujitsu but from the two the quiest is the samsung.

Hope this helps. :)

This is the route I took and it resolved the issue quite nicely. In addition they got it out to me very quickly... :D
