Vista how good in the end will it be?
I have had my Thinkpad A20M for at least 3 yrs. Im not willing to give it up. I like Vista but if they change the specs screw it. XP runs darn well on it.

ATI M 8MB VRAM

How good Vista will be in the end will be in the mind of the beholder. XP Pro works perfectly well on my IBM Desktop and on my T41 Laptop, so I much agree with you on that point.
I run XP in Classic Mode, and my Windows 98, NT4, 2000 and XP machines all look identical as to desktop appearance.
I pulled out my Vista evaluation system last night for two or three hours. I got wireless working - more difficult in Vista than in XP I run Windows Explorer via explorer.scf and there is no counterpart in Vista. That means Explorer always opens in a view that is useless to me. The programs are slower to start than in XP (probably because I have not tuned the system), but with the Vista interface I still see the desktop background with an outline of the application I am trying to run. The icons are too big. The sidebar is hopeless. So at the end of two hours, I returned to the Classic interface and it looks just like my XP system.
So I have yet to understand what Vista will do for me. I know there is enough in XP to prevent me from returning to Windows 2000, and when I can find enough in Vista to do the same, then I will probably migrate sometime in 2007 with new computers.
Like I said, beauty is in the mind of the beholder. Others may like Vista just fine. ... JD Hurst

I have a feeling most people will turn off the new Vista Aero theme once they get bored with it and revert to a classic look. But while the theme is different, the power of XP should hopefully come from improved performance, security, compatibility and stability, all of which make a good reason to upgrade.
I for one prefer a system that is secure and rock solid to one that is pretty and bluescreens all the time.
The one feature MS finally stole from Linux (Apple beat them to it) is the admin password prompt whenever you need to to anything "destructive", like install or uninstall software or change system setings. Loggin out or giving a user Admin rights was a huge blunder, and I love to see that it's not repeated in Vista.
As for stability... only time will tell...

I do not like the "feature" that challenges you for credentials every time you want to install something. I turned that off. I make client userids to be restricted to prevent problem installs, but when I make myself admin, I don't need the constant challenge.
I expect Vista to be stable. XP Pro has been unbreakable for me. I have had a Desktop running 24x7x365 since 1999 with Windows 2000 (machine 1) and Windows XP (machine 2) and no problems with bluescreens.
I do expect to upgrade once I tame any problems and ensure all the software I like will run. ... JD Hurst

Well it boils down to your needs really. Like in our case, we develop solutions. We like it or not, we have to go Vista to test our applications. Even if I don't like the new OS and our clients want it, we dont have a choice.
I'm running Vista Build 5728, so far so good on my machine. It's not perfect (MS isn't GOD0, but surely they will have solutions to every problem. I guess we just have to be patient.
Regards.

IMO we'll have to stick to vista in a window of time. MS is pulling it's marketing machine to make vista the new core os for it's overall business platform.
I think that it's time for a new OS, since XP has come along 5 years. Even that XP is a rock solid platform there a still some things that MS could never get right, like the security of the platform. That got a great improvment since Vista (like Process Security, DEP, UAC, Windows-Firewall, and so on). Personally I need a OS that is solid, that never blue screens, that enables you to work in every environment and that it has a solid and consistent platform for developing applications.
I'm working on Vista since Beta 2 and see the improvments come along with the versions till 5728 (even if i have to run RC1 on my development box) and am still happy that i made the switch. Every new Software takes time to adopt and to stick to it.
