Replace T43p fan will be better?

#1 Post by bin.dong » Sun Oct 01, 2006 4:47 pm

Like a lot of T43p owners I've read and read again all threads discussing about fan noise. Finally, I decide to replace it, so before I take my T43p to the repair store, any suggestion?

It is not the fan's problem. It is the GPU and PCI which generate a lot of heat so that the fan has to start.

My suggestion is: if the fan is clean, no need to replace it. Use TP fan control to reduce the speed and rise the temp threshhold.

The bad thing about T43P is that the hard disk also makes some spinning noise and it is intorerable for me in a quiet environment.

If it is not for the noise, I would keep this laptop but I will call Lenovo monday and ask to return it.

Hey, I am scared. My new T43p is going to be shipped on Tuesday.
Are you really going to return your machine? How noisy is it?

I would say it's about as noisy as a desktop computer. Several people on this forum have very quiet T43(p) machines, but the chance of you getting something equally quiet is pretty low.
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)
Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF (Core i3-3220 / 8GB / 8TB); HP 8300 Elite minitower (Core i7-3770 / 16GB / 9.25TB)
Acer T272HUL; Crossover 404K; Dell 3008WFP, U2715H, U2711, P2416D; Monoprice 10734; QNIX QHD2410R; Seiki Pro SM40UNP

If I find out My second girlfriend is as noisy as the first one, can I call Lenovo to ask them to fix it?

Good luck to you.

I am returning this laptop and will call lenovo tomorrow again.

To be fair, this is a good machine but the noise from the fan and hard disk overcast all the merits it has.

I will miss the excellent screen, the nice function keys and the very blackness of this laptop.

The sales rep who was reluctant to take back the machine and tried to charge me a %15 restocking fee.

Someone also reported similar problem under T60.

restocking fee? That's ridiculous! Even if bestbuy has better policy than Lenovo.

To be fair, noise problem can hardly be defined as a hardware defect by the big companies.

However, if it makes a lot of noise and distract you in a quiet environment, will you buy this laptop as a gift? Or will the sales reps themselves be willing to use it?

Companies can easily claim that since the laptop is functioning, it is not defective but this means forcing a customer who spent $1500 on it to bear this noise for a few years.

Again, if you listen to music all the time or there is enough background noise, you can use this machine. But if you want to read in a quiet environment, you can't ignore the noises.

This is a well-known and well-discussed problem (search 't43 noise' on google), so it is defective!

ya, Thinkpad T series is not suppose to make a loud sound. It seems most of the users used a software to reduce the chance keeping that fan running. If you really can not endure it, then return it, let me know the result.

Right now I am using a T23 and a T43 side by side to surf the internet. The contrast between their noise levels is HUGE! The T23 is audible only when I put my ear within ~1 inch from it, but I can hear the T43's fan very well even from 10 feet away! The T23's HDD is also extremely quiet, unlike the T43's which clicks frequently. I don't regret buying the T43 because I bought it used and paid only about $700, but I sympathize with those who shell out $2K for it!

My T42 is similar. The Hitachi 5K100 80GB hard drive is actually louder than the fan when the system is mostly idle.

My Mac powerbook's fan and hard drive sound like a human is breathing next to you, and that's all. I am going to wait and see whether my new T43 has that problem.

I think, that some T43p's have bad amount of thermal compound mounted on the CPU and GPU.

If you're willing enough you could try to open your computer and replace the TIM for Arctic Silver 5 or Zalman.

I don't think a T43p would run much more hot than a T41p or a T42p.

Well, let's put it this way: T42p never gets past warm on the bottom; T43p gets sufficiently hot on the bottom that you can't use it while on your thigh.

Don't return your T43P :!:

I STRONGLY advice you to remove the CPU thermal compound, and remove the GPU thermal pad and the brown goop too.

I've just applied a new product called Zalman Super Thermal Grease. Zalman is a prestigious brand that makes very silent CPU/Fans for desktop systems.

10 minutes ago I did the Super Pi calculation to 8M, and the CPU temp reached 60 at max:

It's even better than AS5!
