Recover IBM_SERVICE partition after replace new hardisk

#1 Post by b:z » Sun Oct 01, 2006 11:23 pm

Hello,

Today, i have already completed to replace success new hardisk (Seagete 100G, 7200rpm) for my laptop IBM T43 2668-4EA (ST910021A), it works smootly.

After i restore the IBM_SERVICE partition from old hardisk of my system (original hardisk) to new hardisk, i can't access to "AccessIBM" button function properly when remind to press the button during boot progress.

To access to Rescue and Recovery(R&R) mode, i have to use Partition Magic and make the IBM_SERVICE partion as "Active", so i can access to R&R mode :( It too complex when i need to access to R&R mode, and after done, i must change active function to partition which window installed.

How can i fix this problem, so that my system can boot to windows properly, and i can access to R&R mode but don't need to modify the IBM_SERVICE partition as "active"?
Here is the IBM_SERVICE 's info which i got in DiskManagement of window:

Label: IBM_SERVICE
Capacity: 4.01GB
Formated: NTFS
Status: Healthy
Type: EISA Configuration.

Is that correct for IBM_SERVICE partition? Currently the "active" is assigned to window partition (installed windowsXP), and unable to access to R&R while system boot.

Please help me.
Thanks so much.

Format should be FAT, not NTFS.

Thanks for your suggestion. I have tried to format the IBM_SERVICE partition to FAT (FAT16,right?), but the partition tool doesn't allow beacause the size of IBM_SERVICE partition too large (currently it 4GB). For now i have formatted it to FAT32, but i got the same problem as the first explain (first my post).

Please help me.
Thank you

Here is an example of how the partitions should look:

(The above is a snapshot of the display from Partition Magic 8.)

Thanks for your info, but i really don't know how to change my IBM_SERVICE partition to FAT instead of FAT32 now.
The softwares i have used is unable to do: PartitionMagic and Acronis Directory :(

Is IBM_SERVICE partition FAT16? How can i convert it to right format?

Thank you.

Leave it as FAT16, but make sure it is type "Primary". Your problem is probably that the MBR (Master Boot Record) is not set up properly. The only easy way to fix it is to reinstall/update Rescue and Recovery. Use this link:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-65038
The install process updates the MBR, even if it was not an IBM/Lenovo variant. Other methods to "fix" the MBR will not work.

Can you put the old Hard Disk back in and boot to windows? Then you can make a set of restore cd's which will do all this work for you.
T60 2623-D7U, 3 GB Ram.
Dual boot XP and Linux Mint.

After i did with R&R to restore original factory mode, the system is still the same problem, can't access to R&R mode through "AccessIBM" button (i still used the IBM_SERVICE partition on new hardisk, make it as active partition and FAT32). I don't try to make restore CD as you suggest.

Then, i try to install R&R (current version3.10.0022.00), after installed and take system reboot, press "AccessIBM" button, the notify appear on screen (press F11 to .... i don't remember full message), press F11 and it takes me to R&R mode --> good !
I don't change anything to IBM_SERVICE partition, it is still the same configuration:
Label: IBM_SERVICE
Capacity: 4.01GB
Formated: FAT32
Status: Healthy
Type: EISA Configuration.

Finally, i can access to R&R mode, but i have to press F11 after pressed "AccessIBM" button. Is there any way to access to R&R without press F11 button?

Thank you very much for your all help.

Believe it or not, after you press F11 a few times, the AccessIBM button will start working -- magically! I am glad you succeeded. Good luck!
