Please Recommend a Scanner?

#1 Post by BillG » Mon Oct 02, 2006 12:01 pm

I've got a pristine ThinkPad 600X that is happily running Windows 2000 with Office 2002 and I'd like to keep it running happy. :D

Can anyone recommend a good USB sheet scanner for this machine?

Now, what I want is a scanner where all I install are scanner drivers, and nothing else. Of course, that leaves out all HP scanners which force you to install a bunch of (un)helpful junky applications like share-to-web. HP imaging, and other crap, some of which do not have uninstall applications. (Of course, "subscribe to AOL" is installed too, duh).

I'm looking for a good scanner that only installs scanner drivers. Please help a ThinkPad devotee keep his 600X stable.

Thanks! :D

I would have to recommend the Canon CanoScan LiDE 80 if you are looking for something bare bones/lightweight on software installed.

The one I have replaced a failed HP scanner and, thus far, has been an extremely good scanner in comparision. It doesn't install much other than drivers (requires selection during setup) and the Scanner toolbox+OCR (another option). All the reviews I have seen for it have been very good; its other strong points are slimline form factor, lightweight, high DPI for its size, and it can operate off of a single USB port, even for a laptop, without a power adapter. :)

The "street price" that Canon has on its website is, however, misleadingly high as I got mine for significantly under $80 and have seen good deals on them in most stores.

There were some, fortuanately transient, errors in the initial posting process, causing it to not redirect back to the message. So it hung and it got posted twice. :)

Forum malfunction

#5 Post by BillG » Mon Oct 02, 2006 3:54 pm

I posted HERE:
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=31271

I did NOT post anything here in Off-Topic Stuff. I had to do a search to find this thread. Is someone posting with my username? I did NOT posting anything in Off-Topic Stuff.

What the %$#& gives? Now my original thread is locked and I'm accused of double-posting??? Because I am NOT amused if someone is using my username and I do NOT like being accused of cross-posting when I've done nothing wrong!

Relax Bill, it's entirely possible that a Moderator moved your post to OT and someone else replied to it at the same time, resulting in a double thread.

Regardless of what you may have heard to the contrary it's not the end of the world, and I've managed to recall the legbreakers. Seeing as you were innocent, you can answer any knocks on the door in safety.

I moved the original message to Off-Topic since a scanner questions seemed... off-topic to me. Then I finished my lunch and went back to work missing all the hullabaloo until now.

When I got home tonight, I then moved the other one since it's still, well... off-topic!
