Z60T Feedback Sought
Z60T Feedback Sought
I've found a 2513-63U Z60T with 3 year warranty, XP Pro, a/b/g WiFi, Bluetooth, etc., etc. for a very attractive price. Attractive enough that I'm seriously considering grabbing it to play with.
My problem is that I know absolutely nothing about the Z series in general and the Z60T in particular, so I'd like to have some feedback from Z60 owners about their machines, their likes and dislikes and whether or not this is something I should add to the fleet.
I don't anticipate that this will take the place of any of my existing machines, it's just a way to introduce myself to a widescreen format Thinkpad.
Positive, negative, it's all welcome.
Regards,
James

I've have a z60m since Feb this year. I've always been a laptop user and so this must be my 15th laptop but my first ThinkPad.
I have to say that to date, I've been very impressed with it. The build quality is good (it has a very robust feel), connectors are solid and feature wise it had everything.
At this point in time I would definitely buy another one.
Anything at all I don't like? I think the larger capacity battery (9 cell) that sticks out the back is a bit flimsy in the way it docks in that you can wiggle it a tiny bit, but it has never shown any sign of coming out and providing you don't hold it by the battery alone, I guess won't cause any problems.
The battery management controller is superb - it really looks after your battery and I get the feeling that this battery will last the longest of any laptop to date. Typically afer 6-12 months laptop batteries give up on me and stop holding their charge.
The screen hinges are so solid - metal in fact. No sign of wearing loose after 6 months of use - the laptop still feels new.
Security is good - how many other laptops can you lock down and password protect your hard disk data from before booting XP. Even removing the drive to another PC won't make it usable. On mine I can use the fingerprint reader to unlock at BIOS start, and unlike my expectations, the fingerprint technology is not a gimick, it actually works.
I'll stop my subtle rave now. Yes, I think you'd be happy buying a ThinkPad z60.

I love it. At first I was a little iffy about the size, but it grew on me really quickly. Its not as big at the 15 incher, but its not so small that I cant do anything on it. There are a few complaints, namely the ThinkLight is pretty lame, there is no 3-1 card reader (bleah) and that the Hidden Partition takes up alot of space. But other than that, I couldnt be happier with the thing.
I would really only recommend this laptop for someone who didnt already have one though, as compared to others its not as "wowing" - but for me its solid gold.
I have the 2511-E7U

I'm another proud owner of a Z60m.
My previous laptop was a X22 so this was quite a jump. I love the laptop and the only thing that I can think of that I don't like about it is the amber ThinkLight. Why they went from the white ThinkLight to amber is beyond me.
I'm not sure what ANDS means by no 3-1 card reader, mine has one.
I really enjoy using this laptop and wouldn't trade it for anything, except for maybe a Z61P.

Re: Z60T Feedback Sought
You are about to do this for the exact same reason I did. Admittedly I rolled my expectations way down prior to the purchase, not knowing what I was getting, and yet that was the exciting part. I purchased sight unseen the very moment they were released which is something I do not normally do. I generally wait, research it, etc. I have a lot of time on this model and it's performed in an exemplary fashion.JHEM wrote:I don't anticipate that this will take the place of any of my existing machines, it's just a way to introduce myself to a widescreen format Thinkpad.
When my new Z60m arrived I was elated! There isn't anything that I can honestly say is a problem or disappointment. Especially coming from my experience base which is the T series as my main ThinkPad over the last 10 years. I was expecting a lot less from the X60m and it delivers a far superior experience than it's price suggests. The display is bright and clear, the keyboard needs no explanation, the finish of the case is actually more durable than the rubberized surface of the T series, even thought I truly like the feel of the rubberized surface. The Z model runs cool and quiet, has good battery life and great build quality. A very impressive model.
While like you, this is not to replace anything in my lineup, it has really impressed me. I am very happy I made this move as it's a great way to see what a widescreen is like without spending a terrific amount of money.

I want to thank everyone for their feedback.
The matter is moot at the moment WRT the Z60T as while I dithered about the offer expired.
But now there's a Z61M that has attracted my attention and I might be grabbing it this week.
I'll let you all know if I get it and my thoughts after playing with it for a bit.

I certainly have done my share of dithering...JHEM wrote:The matter is moot at the moment WRT the Z60T as while I dithered about the offer expired.

I also have the chance to pick up at Z60t (2511-FEU) used for a good price. I've used a T40 previously and was considering going for a different deal on a T42 (2378-FVU) with the 14.1 SXGA+ screen.
