Suse 10.1 on T43P - Correctly enabling Fn F3 F5 F7 ...
Hi,
I recently scratched my T43P and installed Suse 10.1
I am pretty satisfied with the result, got ATI driver to work very easly by adding the proper repository, xgl is running ok. Wifi out of the box.
One of the last issues I have is the fn F3... and so on keys.
The most important is F5. I use external screens a lot and I change between Work and Home , Road.
I have tried to follow the instructions on thinkwiki.org but I am kind of lost.
Has anybody a list of tasks I need to go through to get my Fn Keys to work.
Something like:
1) Download package XYZ
2) Create shell script
3) Use aticonfig to configure (for F7)
4) Use SaX2 for configuew (Needed?)
5) If use Gnome then ->
6) If you use KDE ->
....
I think I have all the pieces but I am kind of puzzled about what I need to do and in which sequence. What module should I load...
Thanks for any help
Cheers

Hi, I am, too, using suse 10.1 in my t43p.
I had the same issues when I use xgl. And unfortunately I don't have answers. Because of these issues and mostly because of poor opengl performance I stopped using xgl.
for Fn-f3: Basically there is a bug in the function get-X-user when using xgl, that's why this doesn't work
for Fn-F5: it sends commands directly to the ibm-acpi, so I think ibm-acpi must be modified for xgl,
Other keys work ok.
Just a question, Do you have ugly and big fonts for X applications under xgl? For example when I've started xemacs the menu fonts were too big, and the tex fonts were too ugly.
I think Aiglx is a better solution, but it comes with fedora and ubuntu. I hope to have it in the next version of suse.

Hi,
for me none of the keys worked. No matter if I used xgl or not.
I have tried OpenSuSE 10.2 Alpha 5 and all Fn Key work except Fn f7
So i'll guess I will wait for that release (looks cool)
Regarding fonts...
No I did not get any problem.
What video driver are you using ? Radeon? ATI from ww.ati.com/suse repository or latest ATI from www.ati.com?

It's wierd, the keys must work. If you want, you can check the log files. First check /var/log/acpi.log file after you use the keys to see if it recognize keys. And then you can look to /var/log/messages and /usr/lib/powersave/scripts/thinkpad_acpi_events to see which keys are bound to which commands.
:-/ I have this irritating problem with the fonts. My video card is FireGL v3200 using the latest ati drivers. But because of the poor opengl application performance I don't use xgl.
I tried Aiglx with the live madriva cd and it works very very well. It should be possible to use it in suse I think.

OK,
Now I have scratched it...(after testing 10.2 alpha)
About thinkpad_acpi_events.... did you install the script manaually (if yes from where)
I don't feel I had any special problem with fonts. What ati driver did you install.
I tried the one installed from yast (using www2.ati.com/suse as rep)
Worked fine.
I also installed the lates (From www.ati.com) and it worked fine except that it brok xgl.
I am bit lost about all xgl flavours
I know how to install xgl
No clue about aiglx (desn't it need xorg 7.1 ?Do you have any idea, links, for installation)
What about beryl ? :-s
Cheers

thinkpad_acpi_events came with the distribution, I installed nothing. It was already there (opensuse 10.1).
currently I have version 8.29.6 of ati drivers.
yes aiglx needs xorg 7.1, fortunately suse 10.2 will have it.
beryl was a clone of compiz, it contains a couple of plugins more but I'm not sure if it brings anything new on functionality.
