To sleep, or not to sleep...
To sleep, or not to sleep...
I know this has been talked about, I just can't find it...I'm unsure of what state to leave my thinkpad in. I use my Thinkpad every day, but sometimes not for hours at a time...should I let my Thinkpad Standby, or hibernate? I have it set up so that when I close my lid "No action" is taken, although after 10 mins. of no use it will slip to Standby. Also, it has been past habit to "Shutdown" my laptops overnight...is this necessary or recommended? Any comments on what users do would be appreciated

Re: To sleep, or not to sleep...
Many will tell you different but I will suspend between uses during the day and shut it down when done at night. I never use hibernation. I would change the "closed lid" funtion to suspend.

I use standby all the time.

If I may add a comment.2112 wrote:I know this has been talked about, I just can't find it...I'm unsure of what state to leave my thinkpad in. For some reason my t42p (2373kxu) take forever to establish a connection with my Cisco wireless from a cold boot. From suspend it is within seconds. I don't understand why it takes so long but it is the main reason I suspend during a day between uses.

To sleep, perchance to dream?
Same here. I can't recall the last time my T40 or any of my other actively used Thinkpads were actually shutdown.nonny wrote:I use standby all the time.
Whether I'm simply headed upstairs with it, or out to sit lakeside (like now), or heading to the FBO to fly away, my T40 will be slumbering, not shutdown.

I think, in theory if the RAM installed isn't ECC, you might get a lingering error in RAM, but unless you're rendering or doing something hardcore with the computer, clearing the memory shouldn't really be a problem.2112 wrote:Are there any drawbacks to always going to "Standby" only....meaning no regular shutdowns?
All the same, I shut mine down more than I do anything else, though recently I've started to hibernate mine, before I pick it up to take it someplace else, unless I'm going home.
