Help in finding the right HD.

#1 Post by GoyoNeuff » Thu Oct 05, 2006 3:42 pm

Hello All,

I've checked and searched around, but still I don't know which HD to choose to update the 40GB we have. I want to try get it, load it, and try to run it. I will try it and hope not to get the errors I read about.

Here are the choices:

1. HITACHI Travelstar E7K100 HTE721010G9SA00 (0A26618) 100GB 7200 RPM Serial ATA150 Notebook Hard Drive - OEM

1. Seagate Momentus 7200.1 ST910021A 100GB 7200 RPM ATA-6 Notebook Hard Drive - OEM

1. HITACHI Travelstar E7K100 HTE721010G9AT00 (0A26617) 100GB 7200 RPM ATA-6 Notebook Hard Drive - OEM

1. HITACHI Travelstar 7K100 HTS721010G9AT00 (0A25015) 100GB 7200 RPM ATA-6 Notebook Hard Drive - OEM

Thank you all,

K.

For a notebook, one needs the 7K100, not the E7K100. Same drive, different firmware -- but the difference in firmware matters if you are using it in a notebook. The E version is for servers/non-stop environments -- i.e., never stops spinning, defers self-test sequences, + other features based on its firmware -- and, consequently, is not as power-efficient for use in notebooks as the 7K100.

None of this matters is you intend to use the notebook strictly as a desktop machine.

The drive being S-ATA isn't an issue at all? What if it's a T40 we're talking about and it is still in the P-ATA dark ages? :P

Excellent Point :!:

The OP has a T42 in his sig, so assuming it is for his T42 he definitely does not want a SATA drive.

BTW, with a T42, you do not need to worry about any 2010 error you might have read about. Any notebook PATA drive with the correct (2.5-inch x 9.5mm) physical dimensions will work.

I recommend the Fujitsu that I just put in.. the MHV2080AH. It's nearly identical to the IBM 80GB Fujitsu drive, but with 8MB of cache instead of 2MB. Both are 5400RPM drives.

Thank you all,

Yes, as my signature says, it is for a T42 2378-DUU.

Thanks GomJabbar, I was wondering if I'd have that 2010 error; I hope not!

1. So it is the "HITACHI Travelstar 7K100 100GB 7200 RPM Serial ATA-6 Notebook Hard Drive - OEM" still the best option?

2. It is there a way to get my baby to work with a SATA HD?

3. Will I see any improvement if I have the chace to update to a SATA instead of PATA?

Cheers!! :)

No, that drive won't work in your T42, as it is serial ata (S-ATA or SATA). You'll need to find a parallel ATA drive, like the link to the Fujitsu drive that I posted. What capacity are you looking for? Just anything above 40, or do you want at least 100GB?

160GB @ 5400 RPM will work. If you are really interested in performance, then get a 7200 RPM drive. Also, the larger the cache, the better the performance generally. Noise is a factor with some models. If you find one you are interested in, then search this forum for that model, using the Search button at the top of the page. There you will get user's opinions. Newegg.com is a popular site for purchasing hard drives. Again, you do not want to buy a Serial ATA or SATA drive for you T42. It will not work.

I seriously need to replace my E7K100 60GB with other drive that doesn't generate too much heat.
My laptop CPU temp reaches the 53-56C, because the HDD reaches 42-44C (too hot)

Is there a way to change the E7K100 firmware to the 7K100??
I've searched in Google, but have not find yet a solution.

P.S. The drive never shuts down, it's always ON, independent on the Windows Power Scheme applied.

1) You think 42-44C is hot for your HD? If that involves the HD actively working, you're fine. HD's go into the low 50's under heavy load.

2) Your CPU temp is not high either. Run tpfancontrol if it bothers you.

3) Firmware can't be changed, buy the other drive.

No SATA drive for T43s either, right?

correct.. though they use an SATA bus, they use plain old PATA drives.

Yup, SATA-PATA bridge is in use though. If you get really lucky, you just might end up with a drive that doesn't cause the system to throw the 2010 error on boot. Most likely, though, you will have to either get a Hitachi and risk flashing the firmware on it to the correct state, or just leave it alone. :)

Thanks guys. Why have a SATA-PATA bridge anyway? Why not just make it so that T43s take SATA drives? Seems kind of counterintuitive.

So is this why it errors to 2010 on boot and so the firmware upgrade is needed on drives that are bought from elsewhere?

Because they use a PATA to SATA connector?

Any help in making sense of all of this would be great. :)

Thanks

for my t41 2379-DJU laptop, will this work or will there be compatibility issues? also, how do you install the recovery partition onto a new HDD? Thanks

I got the 160GB 5400RPM drives and the performance difference is negligible if you have a large enough cache in RAM and/or don't use very(!) HD intensive applications.

I use those drives on a system with 2GB RAM and most of the time they're not spinning anyway.
But if you're low on RAM (swapping!) or do e.g. video editing 24/7 or try to run a web server of your laptop, then you'd need all the spin you can get.

JUST STAY AWAY FROM THOSE SEAGATE DRIVES - THEY'RE BAAAAD!

Forgive me for cross-posting, but below is the text of a reply I just posted on another current thread here discussing drive upgrades:

I recently purchased two Seagage 160 GB drives for my T42p - one for the primary bay, and another for the slide-in holder that fits in the large slot (Ultrabay Slim) on the side of the computer.

These have worked very well, they are quiet and fast. Below I have listed the 'official' name of the drive, as well as a link to the product page at the supplier that I bought the drive from. The supplier is neither here nor there, I'm just providing the link because it describes the drives.
