Adaptec SlimSCSI 16-Bit PCMCIA card problem.

#1 Post by Charles Mann » Fri Oct 06, 2006 5:40 pm

I am having a problem connecting my Microteck Scanmaker E6 scanner via a Adaptec SlimSCSI 16-Bit PCMCIA card to my T60p 2623DDU. The scanner and SlimSCSI work fine on my A30p under Windows XP, but the T60p with Windows XP, fails to find a driver for the SlimSCSI. The A30p and XP identify the SlimSCSI as “Adaptec_SlimSCSI 16-Bit PC Host Adapter”, while the T60p and XP call the SlimSCSI, “Adaptec_Inc. APA-1460_SCSI_Host_Adapter”. Both computers have the SCSI driver path as “C”\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\sparrow.sys”. I think the problem is how the two copies of XP identify the SCSI card. Adaptec has been no help, they say the SCSI card is so old, I need to by another one.

Does anyone have ideas to solve this problem?

Try forcing XP to load the same driver for the SlimSCSI card on the T60p that you're using on the A30p.

mrpaulin,

I tried using the path to sparrow.sys as the driver path, but the T60p Windows XP says there is not a driver there.

Additional information, I have been successful in installing the SlimSCSI on a A20p with WindowsXP, the SCSI card is identified as “Adaptec_SlimSCSI 16-Bit PC Host Adapter” also. The T60p has the WindowsXP that Lenovo provides, but the A30p and A20P have copies of retail version of XP….if this makes any difference…it seems I read somewhere in these forums that these versions of XP may differ? I am still hung up on the fact that T60p identifies the SCSI as “Adaptec_Inc. APA-1460_SCSI_Host_Adapter”, and the A30p and A20p use “Adaptec_SlimSCSI 16-Bit PC Host Adapter”.

This is a long shot, but make sure that you T60 has the ASPI drivers installed. You can find ASPI here:
ftp://ftp.adaptec.com/software_pc/aspi/aspi_v472.exe

I have that same SCSI card floating around here somewhere. I used it successfully on my T42, but I haven't tried it on my T60.
Apathy is on the rise, but nobody seems to care.

A couple of possibilities........

Run System File Checker: SFC /scannow. You will probably need a Windows Install CD for it to get files from.

Go to Windows Update with the card installed and see if Windows Update finds the files needed. Use the Custom choice to see if anything relevant appears.

If the lower slot on the T60p is a CardBus slot maybe the system is having problems connecting a driver with a 16-bit card in that slot. That card is at least 3 generations back AFAIK. The current CardBus card is a SlimSCSI 1480. I'm running one on my T60p to connect my Polaroid (Microtek) scanner with no problems.

I'd check out the following if you're in it for the long haul:

http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/products/s ... APA-1460D/

http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/products/s ... APA-1480A/

http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/products/s ... B2Xchange/

I have a spare 1480 that I'd let go at a fair price or you might find one on that auction site. If you're interested drop me a message.

Good luck!

BTW the scanner performance will be much better with a 32 bit CardBus adapter than with a 16 bit card.

scratch had the answer...OLD technology...I guess I will use the A30p for my scanner computer...network to T60p for Photoshop.

Thanks Guys..

Update on the Adaptec SlimSCSI problem

#8 Post by Charles Mann » Wed Nov 08, 2006 5:42 pm

I have purchased an Adaptec SlimSCSI 1480B to use on the T60p. Windows XP does not recognize the 1480B and provide the driver. I also have a USB 2.0 problem that XP does not recognize a LaCie 500gb USB drive that it should have the driver for. Any suggestions to correct this problem?
