Mouse problems (In Windows and Linux)

#1 Post by nitro2k01 » Mon Oct 09, 2006 8:02 am

I have two different mouse problems, in Windows and Linux.
In Windows I'm using the third button as a modifier key to allow scrolling with the wart. But that doesn't work with Firefox or Opera. Is there some way to make it work? Some driver upgrades?
In linux in the other hand, X thinks the wart is a button, and every time I move the cursor, unless I touch the wart really softly, the cursor will fall down to the lower left corner and X's menus will flicker. How do I configure X to ignore the button in the wart?

Yes, using the latest TrackPoint drivers and the latest version of Firefox/Opera and the latest official Windows Operating System (XP SP2) should allow proper scrolling. You didn't tell us which of any of these things you are using so it is hard to know which one needs to be updated.

Latest version of Opera and Firefox, XP SP1 (I don't intend to upgrade, and I don't think that's where the problem is) So it's probably down to the TrackPoint drivers. Where to find them?

All the latest device drivers for your machine are available here:
Software and Device Drivers - ThinkPad 600, 600E, 600X.

A link to this page is also available by following the link in Question 2 of the ThinkPads.com FAQ. If you haven't checked the FAQ out yet, then I'd recommend giving it a once over.

Let us know if the latest TrackPoint driver solves the problem.

That indeed solved the problem.
But the FAQ inspired me to upgrade my BIOS. But the problem is that printing on the sticker where the bar code is supposed to be is torn off. So what I know is that I have a 2645, but I don't know the submodel, and thus I don't know if 1.15 or 1.16 is right for me. Is the version critical? Is there any other way I can find out?

I do not have my 600E with me at the moment, but I think I remember seeing the complete model and serial number from one of the BIOS (Easy Setup) menus. Hold down the F1 key while powering on to access the BIOS. I'm not exactly sure which icon you then have to click on, but I think what you are looking for is in there.

Finally pulled out the "old girl" tonight to finish this post...

Yup, all you have to do is access the Easy Setup screen and it's right there:

System-unit serial number 2645MMMSSSSSSS

The "MMM" is the submodel (i.e. 5BU) and the "SSSSSSS" is the serial number.

Hmm... now the display is streaking in the middle when the screen is tilted at a certain angle. Probably a loose cable. This system has been laughing at my previous attempts at curing a balky backlight. It usually takes anywhere from 3 to 7 minutes before the CCFL decides to fire up. I've replaced the entire panel, the inverter and Sub Card and it hasn't helped. Now it's teasing me with this streaking... maybe I should just get rid of it, but it was my first Thinkpad and even with its flaws, it's still a great little system.
