I have always wanted to buy a cheapo violin and learn to play it. The piano (which I play, in case you haven't noticed) is a great instrument, but I also love violin music and envy those who can play it.

A friend of mine left one at my house a couple of years ago and I picked it up and started teaching myself how to play it. I play lead guitar pretty well, play in some classic rock and blues/jazz fusion type bands so the fingering is not a problem. It is quite an elegant instrument to play, it vibrates your upper body and feels like no other instrument.
Pianowizard, i'm a classical music and pianist fan, that's pretty much all i listen to anymore, Cziffra, Hoffmann, Horowitz, Rachmaninoff, Cortot, etc. I tried to teach myself piano but could not get it. Violin music is great to listen to also, the harpsicord is also one of my favorite instruments.
I'm hoping someone might have a violin stuffed away in a closet they want to get rid of.

Kyocera, that's awesome! We both love Thinkpads and classical piano music! I have a web site where I critique great classical pianists, including the ones you mentioned:Kyocera wrote:Pianowizard, i'm a classical music and pianist fan, that's pretty much all i listen to anymore, Cziffra, Hoffmann, Horowitz, Rachmaninoff, Cortot, etc.

Acoustic 6 and 12 string guitar, 5 string banjo and classically trained pianist.Kyocera wrote:I play lead guitar pretty well, play in some classic rock and blues/jazz fusion type bands so the fingering is not a problem.
Sing bass (basso profundo) and bass baritone. I do a killer Don Giovanni, Mikado, Audrey II or Caiaphas!
Maybe we need to form a pickup band?

Contact a violin teacher in your area, they know who has decent student instruments for sale. Private teachers and also teachers at the local high school and/or college. It's not just the instrument, it's the setup and service. You want an instrument that's ready to play, not one that just came out of someone's attic with no hair on the bow and a collapsed soundpost, etc.
