A31 Thinkpad Caddy & Heat

#1 Post by rmplayer » Tue Oct 10, 2006 2:42 pm

I have just purchased an A31 thinkpad and require a caddy and cover. Are there any other models that have compatable covers.

I also find that the A31 blows a lot of heat withiin 5 to 10 minutes when tested with the PC Doctor. Is this indicative of a overheating CPU?

Think pad caddy and heat

#3 Post by rmplayer » Wed Oct 11, 2006 1:37 pm

I tried the web address you mentioned and find it is in Japanese which I don't read. Do you have the download site in English?

I haven't tried the thinkpad under load since I still don't have a caddy. Are there any other models having a HD cover and caddy compatable with the 27L6768 ?

When I get the thinkpad running I will probably get a wireless card. The A31 doesn't appear to have a seperate antenna so will any mini-PCI combo Intel card 06P3809 work?

I did notice when I originally posted that link that I got a different result each time I clicked.

The main site is http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconValley-Oakland/8259/

The second link from the top that says "here" is what you need to click on. I'm not much for reading Japanese either! :)

Are you familiar/comfortable with opening up the laptop to apply arctic silver 5 on the processor?

thinkpad caddy and heat

#5 Post by rmplayer » Wed Oct 11, 2006 9:03 pm

Thanks, I have the mobile meter on disk but since it requires windows I will have to wait until I get a caddy. Have you any input on models that will have a compatable HD cover for the A31?
I haven't taken the thinkpad apart but will read the manual while waiting for a caddy.

I will probably install an internal wireless card and have read that the antenna is installed behind the screen. Is an antenna necessary for internet reception within a close range or can the internal cards pick up within 150 feet or so without the antenna?

you'd probably have trouble getting a usable signal without the antenna from 15 feet, let alone 150. i can't add anything about the caddy cover, sorry.

You can slide the HD right into the slot and with a little bit of effort line up the pins, then just push it in. It works fine. There is no sort of caddy for it. There is a metal cover presumably to shield it from RFI. The cover changes the thickness just enough to make the HD line up wiht the pins easly. The outer plastic cover just has a couple of holes that snap over the 2 HD screws closest to the edge of the laptop. They aid in removal. A small jewlers screw driver on the back of a screw hole or a pair of needle nose do a fine job of removing the HD. There really isn't much holding it in there. Assuming the plastic cover is not broken there is one screw that holds it on. The tab for that screws breaks very easily. After that the cover is held on by being attached to the HD, which is held in by the pins and some friction. On one drive just to be safe I put some clear packing tape down on the circuit board side to insulate it, but I've also put them in without the shield at all with no issues. YMMV. The tape may cause static charges so be careful.

I will try the tape during the coming week and test the heat from the CPU using the downloaded program.
