[T60p] - Processor upgrade Core Duo -> Core 2 Duo ?

Hi there,


I've got a T60p Core Duo 2.16ghz, and would like to know if it can be upgraded in the future..

So has anyone attempted to upgrade a T60p Core Duo to a Core 2 Duo ?

I know technically the chipset would allow this, and the watts are pretty much the same for the Core 2 CPU.

My T60p is model 2007-93g, which I believe is the model just before the Core 2's came in.

Any info would be appreciated !

Hmmmm... Questions?

(1) Does anyone see Lenovo letting all the current T60 owners upgrade to a T61 for the cost of a chip? I have a hard time imagining that......

(2) Assuming a bios (official or hacked) is released that actually suppports it.... What level of hardware skill would you need to make the change?.... I haven't broken open this machine (2007-94U), so I don't know.... is the CPU soldered, for example

(3) with the change in bus speed.... would it impact your existing memory performance? (someone else mentioned cooling issues... etc)

(4) Finally.... wouldn't this totally shred the warranty?

Hi, and thanks for the answers..

(1) Probably they didn't have it in mind when they made the T60, but then again - alot of companies don't consider the aftermarket upgrade/hacking, even though its perfectly possible. After all the BIOS is probably much the same (saving money) within the area of models (Core Duo, i945GM). The intel flash thing

Still this upgrade would lengthen the time my current T60 (which is rather expensive), could be usable...

(2) Hardware skills should be nothing more than opening the thing, and swap the cpu (which is in a socket), and reapplying thermal paste.

(3) The bus speed of the Core 2 Duo is the same (atleast for the current models). The watts for the Duo 2 2,33ghz ~34 and Duo 2,16ghz ~31, so i dont think it would pose a problem there. Also the multiplier is locked within the CPU, so the current bios must use this as grounds for setting the speed correctly. Ofcourse I dont know how it would react to the indentifier string within the processor, but that would come down to a test

All Merom processors are based on FSB667.

(4) Since my warranty is only limited to 1 year, it will probably end being useless at the time i decide to take it apart anyways. But yes, disassembling your machine will definitely 'shred' your warrany.


Anyways, when time comes and the Core 2 Duo is down in price (due to some new models, or whatever), I will definitely try this out (I've got a Dell notebook which would fit nicely with the current Duo 2.16ghz).
