Strange freeze-up on A31

#1 Post by schen » Thu Oct 12, 2006 11:03 am

My wife received an A31 to replace and update her A30 a few weeks ago and give the similarities of the machine, I simply moved all the drives over from the A30 and then ran the Software Installer to update the drivers. Immediately, it started locking up when doing normal tasks (email, office, internet). So I did a quick reload of the OS (Win XPP) and everything went well, but as soon as she started using it, the thing started freezing again.

So I decided to check for any memory incompatibility by trying 1 module at a time in each socket. Everything was fine expect for 1 exception. One module didn't like 1 socket! :? It seems to work fine now.

Has anyone experienced this strange phenom? Any thoughts?

Lockup A30 upgrade to A31.

First off, stop what you are doing. Don't attempt to use any a31 parts with an a30. The BUS speeds don't match. Read the specs here at lenovo :D (ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mo ... 02.pdf){on page 49}
to see the a30 runs with a 133mhz and the a31 runs with a 400. This is why you are experiencing lock ups. Also you will see the a31 runs memory at 266 mhz. :roll: :shock: REMOVE YOUR MEMORY IMMEDIATELY AND ORDER NEW MEMORY OF 266mhz DDR SPEED (pc2100) or your wife may experience lock ups, especially after you might have not done the justice you sought. GOOD LUCK... :cry:

:!:

what you did here could have killed your memory socket. I have just upgraded my a30p with an a31 screen. This is a easy compatibility match. Memory, cpu are totally different and again stop what you are doing.

:BAAAD!:
No more strange phenomena for you. it is merely a compatibility issue with memory. and cpu. buy new memory for the a31. if your lucky, you may not have burnt the socket or it may work again. The drives, and other stuff may work fine as expect.

Never approach a computer loaded with something like guts you might expect, check boards, specs, then expect more research if it looks like its been screwed with...[/img]
Never approach a computer thinking you will fix it really fast....
