function buttons auto-activating!?!?!?

#1 Post by HockeyZ39 » Thu Oct 12, 2006 3:56 pm

I just started playing this new game rappelz, well anytime I fire it up the my t60p starts muting and un-muting the volume on its own. It also brings up the thinkvantage menu, turns on the light, changes the brightness, and hits the dual screen mode all on its own. What the heck can I do to stop this?

That's...highly anomalous. I have never seen a T60 do that, nor any other Thinkpad for that matter. It really is quite strange for a game to "accidentally" change all those settings by itself. It might be that it isn't filtering keyboard input correctly and that some of the keystrokes that are meant for the game are getting through to the windows queue handler instead.

Have you tried running it in safe mode? :)

If you have Microsoft IntelliType installed, try uninstalling it and see if the problems go away. I've had similar (but not as serious) problems with IntelliType in the past.

You are not crazy; I had the exact same problem playing Space Cowboy, another game from gpotato.com. I'd say something in their core game engine is broken. It's quite weird and irritating. The game sucked for other reasons though, so I never tried to fix it.

I can understand the game's engine sucking and all but....ThinkLight activation?

I am sure that has to remap input, then it doesn't catch all the key_down events within the engine. :|

Yeah, it's hard for me to imagine how this bug could occur. I'm assuming the function key support is built in fairly deep in the Windows drivers stack. But I'm 100% confident that the bug occurs only in this one game for me, and given the poster above has a problem with another game from the same company, I'd say it's clear it's their problem.

I spent a fair amount of time looking around the game company's forums for discussion or a fix, btw. No luck.

ya i have a thread going with two others on there support forums with no luck there either... :( Its so annoying but I really enjoy the game. Some times it will not do it for an hour, but sometimes it will do it non-stop.

Try to end the process TPHKMGR.EXE in the Task Manager. (TPHKMGR = ThinkPad HotKey ManaGeR) That will solve your problem.

When you are finished playing the game, just restart the program which is located in C:\Program Files\Lenovo\PkgMgr\HOTKEY\TPHKMGR.EXE (at least, on my machine).

Good luck!
