Transferring data from Thinkpad T42p to desktop??
I need some help on what is the best way to transfer music files from my T42p to my desktop? Im just not sure what the best way to do this is. I really dont want to burn a disc on my TP and take it in the other room and import it on the desktop. There has got to be a way to use a crossover cable or something between each computer and setup a file share that way? Or is there a way to do it through the router? My tp connects wirelessly through the same router that my desktop connects to wired. Can anybody help me out?

I just use the ethernet port via a regular ethernet cable, a trick that I learned on this forum. Use 10.10.10.2 as the IP address on one machine and 10.10.10.3 on the other, and 255.0.0.0 as the subnet mask.

Can you please break it down a bit farther for me. I dont really do any file sharing at all and Im a lil bit lost in this process. Which machine do i set the subnet on? does it need to be the same on both machines? Do you have to set something up for this? How exactly do I send files back and forth? Lots of questions and hopefully I can get a handle on this to make it easier.

first make sure both computers are on same workgroup, go to
control panel (switch to classic view)-> system -> computer name (tab) ->
make sure workgroups are the same on both computer, otherwise Change (button), and restart
default workgroup is: WORKGROUP
Now onto the instructions:
1) either wire T42p to router (faster) or skip this step to do wirelessly (slower)
---on the T42p
2) right-click on folder containing mp3s
3) click on sharing (tab)
4) check Share this folder on the network (if there is a popup, select just enable file sharing)
---on the desktop
5) open up my network places
6) if you don't see your t42p's mp3 folder, then click on view workgroup computers
7) then u should see the shared folder and copy and paste needed files

thank you. I have setup a local network with a couple computers before so we can play Warcraft 3 through a network switch. I have also used this connection to get files from each computer, but the steps to get there were a lil sketchy. Thanks for the help and when I get a chance I will get those iTunes songs transferred around.

something is still not happening wirelessly, but direct wire transfer worked fine last night. Does anybody know the name of the file in iTunes that holds all the songs from the library. I found what i thought was it, but it was an xml document, definitely not it. Im not seeing the TP on my desktop network places, and when i search for it, it comes up an error. Hummmm, Im gonna have to put some more time on this a lil later tonight.
