9600 GPU Temps

#1 Post by FTC » Fri Oct 13, 2006 5:26 am

Hi,

The forums are full with samples of the 'normal' CPU temp for the T4x series.

I am now interested on GPU temps. I would like to know the highest operating temp for the Mobility 9600 in the T42s. (and btw, other T4x's GPUs as well). This is useful information for anyone to check wether the heat generated by the GPU on his machine is normal or not (specially important for those who reinstalled the log FAN on their machines).

The problem is that the GPU cools down very fast and if you are running a game, by the time you switch to fullscreen and look at the GPU temp (w/tpfancontrol), it is already a lot cooler than the temp it was running at.

So I propose the following method :

1. Start TP fancontrol program to see the GPU temp. (if necessary, deactivate ACPI functionality in NHC to avoid coexistance problems)

2. Run ATITOOL 'Scan for artifacts' test for 5 minutes. This is a very demanding test on the GPU, and runs on the desktop, so you can read the temps while building up.

3. Take note of the GPU temp as reported in fancontrol.

4. Post result here, as well as any additional data (such as GPU overclock) that may be affecting it, together with your machine / CPU and GPU models.

Just as a start :

My T42 with a Mobility ATI9600 default speeds (320/210) max temp=84ºC

My T42 with a Mobility ATI9600 overclocked speeds (400/230) max temp = 87ºC

Pienso que...

I think your GPU temps are quite normal under load. My FireGL T2[320.00 Core / 201.79 Memory] on my T41p runs @ 81C after doing the test (Goes from 50C to 81C) in 5min:

Would be interesting to see more results.

Hi,

Well, here it goes another result :

T40 w/ATI Radeon 7500 overclocked to 260/183 62ºC
T40 w/ATI Radeon 7500 overclocked to 280/233 64ºC

So it really looks like the 7500 is a bit cooler than the 9600s....

CPU 62C
GPU 81C

Could anyone beat those temps? and post a thumbnail (authentic ones, plz)

It does sound very high, dangerously high in fact. But even on the desktop I think 6600GTs under load went to 90degC. So it's only natural without the space and the cooling, that they get really quite hot. I still don't think it's dangerously hot though.

Those numbers seem on target. My CPU is fluctuating between 72 and 76C, and my GPU is @ 77.

I applied arctic silver 5 to both about two years ago but didn't remove the thermal pad because I was worried that the heatsink wouldn't make contact with the gpu if I did. I guess I should go redo that.

I'll post a screenshot when I get to 20 minutes, it's only been 10 so far.

GPU just hit 78, cpu @ 72. I run folding@home 24x7x365 on my thinkpad too, but this is making the cpu hotter since the gpu is hard at work too.

edit: just noticed that the fan was only at 3700rpm. I'll bump it to max speed if that's what you did. gotta check your screenshot.

Hi,

Well, in my T42 (1.8Ghz / 9600 GPU not overclocked) the 20 minutes test gives

CPU 62C
GPU 82C

This is better than previous posted results since this time :
- I had no 'grid' process in the background helping to heat up the CPU (and the GPU since both share heatsink)
- I configured 'dynamic switching' for the CPU

All in all, quite similar to the results posted with the firegl T2.

CPU 73
GPU 79
fan at 3600 RPM, 24 minutes runtime so far.

I'll keep it running but up the fan speed and see where the temps go.

WOW!
Your GPU didn't get to the 80'sC. My fan started to hit level 7 (4200rpm) BIOS controlled, I didn't set it to Manual after 15min of the overheating process. I run this test at full Max. Performance on the CPU and stock GPU values.

I ran @ stock GPU settings (playing around with overclocking the GPU now though) with CPU on dynamic.. the CPU was kept pegged at 1.8ghz 100% load at all time with folding@home running though.

It never automatically went to the max fan speed, even with the numbers I posted.

My GPU core temp is hitting 83C right now, but I'm running at 427.09 Core 240.55 memory speed, and that temp was during the heat-up cycle. Also with folding@home keeping the cpu pegged and the fan at the 3600/3700 speed (bios-controlled).
