A21m Memory question!!

#1 Post by srkumar1946 » Fri Oct 13, 2006 8:47 am

Hello Friends,
I am having Thinkpad A21m 2628-G2U laptop computer for the past 2 years. It had given flawless service so far.of late,as reported by many others in this forum,I am also having power on problem.i am unable to start the laptop;when the power button is pressed harddisk and battery lights flash for a short time and nothing happens;no display or IBM logo or bios screen.I changed CMOS battery;no joy.if the memory modules in the two sodimm sockets are faulty can that result in the starting problem?I am also requesting some clarifications regarding memory. The hardware maintenance manual for this model says the system board has 64Mb of memory built in.does this mean that one of the two sodimm sockets has 64MB ram module installed or the system board itself has 64 MB and we can add memory in the 2 sodimm sockets as an option to upgrade.if that is the case will the laptop start without any memory modules installed in the two sodimm sockets?any suggestion or guidance will be highly appreciated.regards and thanks to all.

The A21m has 2 memory slots that take pc-100 sdram. They don't need to be paired. The machine will not boot without memory installed so if you believe that a faulty memory module is the culprit then I suggest removing one; reboot. If the problem persists try the other module; reboot. If this doesn't solve your problem then it is likely the issue lies somewheres else.

Something else I'd reccomend trying (if all else fails) is removing the mini-pci lan/modem combo card. The only reason I'm suggesting this is because it's how I turned a worthless doorstop I got from work into a fine machine. :)

Hope some of that helps, good luck!!

Dear Mr.Jonny,
Thanks a lot for your suggestion.Mini pci modem card is already removed.still the problem persists. As advised by you,i'll try to install one memory module at a time and see what happens. Thanks once again and regards.
