T42 2373-3XU arrived today

#1 Post by sktn77a » Wed Aug 25, 2004 7:45 pm

My third T4X arrived today:

PM 735 1.7
Radeon 9600 64Mb
15" SXGA+ Flexview
512Mb RAM
Thai Keyboard
Sony Battery
40gb HD
Intel b/g

This is the best built of any of my T4x thinkpads (no dead pixels, no palm rest problems, no assembly problems) - none of the problems people have occasionally experienced here.

BUT......................................................................

How can anybody read 1400x1050 on the 14" screen or, even worse, 1600x1200 on the 15" screen??? I can barely read the 1400x1050 on the 15" screen! The computer is for my son who hopefully has better eyes than dad. Still, the first thing I did was to enable cleartype and set the resolution at 1024x768. I can live with that. He can change it if he wishes.

But this computer is "da bomb" (as he and his friends would say)!

I just got the exact same model for myself today. I was a little concerned about how it would turn out (keyboard flex, snug battery, dead pixles, etc) but it is in absolutely perfect condition. Now I know why people stick with Thinkpads and don't worry too much about the extra cost.

As for the resolution and screen size, I can certainly see how it could be a bit troublesome for someone that doesn't have young, fresh eyes. Luckly I'm 18 years old and my eyes are in perfect condition. I am loving the high resolution and extra work space that comes of it.

This computer is absolutely amazing.

That is the exact model that I ordered. I hopefully will receive it by Friday! I've been using a surprisingly quick and heavy Sony Vaio PII 366mhz with 192 MB RAM for the last 3 weeks, so the new laptop will a welcome change. I agree with you about the 15" 1600x1200 resolution. I have good vision, but that res. is just seems way too high for reading text. I have never actually used anything higher than 1400x1050, but I imagine it takes quite a bit of getting used to.
T42 2373-3XU - $1840 - She served me well for almost 5 years
T400 on order as of 11/18/09 - $1400 (including Intel SSD) - P8700, 4GB RAM, 80GB X25G2 SSD (I upgraded), 3470 256MB
T420s - loaded, still in use as secondary machine
T440p - loaded, primary

Give your eyes a week or so, they'll quickly get used to 1600x1200 (read: don't give up and go to 1024x768 so quickly! :) ) My dad is almost 60 and he's running 16x12 on a 15" laptop (unfortuantely not a tpad).

I love the 1400 x whatever on my 15". I don't have perfect vision but it's just so nice and productive to have the extra space there. You can easily raise the dpi or font size. But that's just me.

is the "keyboard flex" people are talking about the problem on the lower left hand side of the palm rest that bends above the open slot?

i just got a 23733VU today and everything seems pretty much perfect. the only thing i didnt like was how that part of the palm rest was a lil too loose and kinda made a clicking sound.

also, how snug are your batteries? mine shifts a little, but for the most part its in there pretty good.

also i have no dead pixels unlike that SINGLE mind blowingly irritating one on my old t41 :D

Well, no palmrest or keyboard flex/creaking and the battery fits just fine. I think the "loose battery" syndrome is actually a computer shell tolerance issue as both Sony and Sanyo batteries are loose in my T40 but snug in my T41/T42.

Just got my new t42 (same model) a couple of days ago. I love the thing.

The flexview at 1440 is freaking amazing- although I believe I got stuck with a China keyboard. Called IBM, said as soon as the new thai's were in I'd be receiving one in the mail. Sweet.
