more ram slowing me down?

#1 Post by Jiro » Sun Oct 15, 2006 12:53 am

ok i just found out the extra 128mb ram in my t41 is pc2100 while the stock stick is a pc2700. So ive been running like this for about a year now without knowning, should i remove this ram and run single 512 pc2700? will i see improvement in speed? I just ordered another 512mb pc2700 sodimm to replace the 128 pc2100... i wonder how much improvement i should get...

you won't get any. the fsb on the t41 is a 400 fsb speed, going from 2100 to 2700 won't show any improvement i don't think.

The processor front side bus is 400mhz, however with a PC2700 (DDR333) stick and a PC2100 (DDR266) stick in there, the BIOS will automatically run the RAM at the speed of the slowest stick (PC2100 or DDR266).

In synthetic benchmarks you would see a difference in RAM bandwidth, however, while that may improve performance of memory intensive tasks it will *probably* not be noticable IMHO.

I'd probably just let the 128 meg stick in there till the other 512 meg stick shows up.
