T23 Repair/Defect Survey - Please Participate!!

#1 Post by Bg357 » Mon Oct 16, 2006 12:14 am

:!: Please Note :!:

Vote only if you've been a T23 user for more than 6 months.
You don't need to be a current T23 user to participate in the survey as long as you were a user for at least six months at one time.

Some of the questions are a little long but they have to accommodate the fact that you can only select one.

7 lousy votes! Am I supposed to believe that there are only 7 people on this board who've owned a T23 for more than 6 months?

Come on people, is it that hard to take this simple survey?

I have had, or shall I say might still have, the systemboards from 3 T23s that have had the same flexing issues that caused one or two of the inductors on the bottom of the systemboard to break loose. Several forum members have been able to resolder the connection and have a working systemboard again. I just haven't gotten around to doing it yet.....but I am hopefullly going to be picking up some T23 parts to get one of the boards into a barebone T23...then sell it.

The 6 T23s you see in my .sig were obtained less than 6 months ago, yet they all came to me with some kind of problem (either firmware or hardware). They have all been fixed so that they are completely functional.

If you relax your time limit, then I can attest to the following:

My T23 has/had a defective motherboard failure but no cracks in the casing.
My T23 did not have the above issues but had other defects that required repair.
My T23 has been relatively free of hardware defects.

(edit: Forgot about one T23 that I've sold to a friend. That one also had hardware issues, so make that 7 now-working systems. If you want to include ALL of my T23 purchases, then I have to say I've got one completely dead T23 motherboard that I'm stripping parts off of (cf. bottom of this thread). So maybe, I should say 8. Of course the simple matter that I prefer buying systems that have problems, probably should exclude me, and my data, from the survey. That's why I haven't bothered entering.)

The T23 I picked up from dorronto has a large gray patch on the lcd, but I think that may depend on the manufacturer of the screen itself. Either way it's an ugly, disappointing facet of LCD technology.

I once plopped my T23 into the port replicator and then smelled something burning. Later when I noticed my battery stopped charging, I sent the laptop in for service and IBM replaced the motherboard. IBM may have changed my battery too, but I don't recall checking that since everything seemed to work fine after I got the laptop back from service. I didn't notice any cracking in the case until earlier this year (which was long after my warranty expired).

Apparently so. Yelling at them isn't likely to help.

Having taken apart my fair share of T23s in the last few months, I think I can say that one of the most common problems I've seen is a broken metal mount on the Ultrabay. This is the piece that is tack-welded onto the frame of the Ultrabay and is attached by a single screw to the back panel of the laptop (upper screw of the pair in the left corner, as viewed from the back, next to the Ultrabay). From what I can tell, opening and closing the lid puts a large strain on this piece of metal. If the screw on the bottom of the laptop next to the Ultrabay release tab is loose or missing, it allows that corner to flex even more. For reference, page 112 of the April 2002 HMM for the T2x shows the corner I'm speaking of. It's where the arrow showing item "1" is pointing.

A search of the T2x/T30 archives shows one other post that seems to mention this:

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=27674

There doesn't appear to be much one can do to eliminate the flexing of that corner. Holding down the center of the keyboard with one hand while lifting the lid with the other seems to reduce the pressure, but it does not totally get rid of it. I suppose that if the LCD hinges are loosened up a bit, that could also help but at the risk of having a "floppy" lid.

Most people love surveys but I suspect many of us haven't used or didn't use a T23 for over 6 months. I have owned two T23's in the last ~3 months but that's less than 6 months, so I can't participate. If I still own a T23 three months from now, I will cast my vote.
