Help! XP-SP2 crashes wireless connection
Help! XP-SP2 crashes wireless connection
Hi, I'm using T40p under XP-SP1 smoothly untill yesterday I installed the SP2 of Windows XP-Pro.
The IBM Access Connections cannot establish the wireless connection anymore. As a try, I updated the driver of the WLAN card and the IBM Access Connections to the latest stand (Aug,23,04), in vain... I notice that in my "network connections" there is newly a " wireless network connection" added by the SP2. Does this cause a conflict to the IBM Access Connections? How to solve the problem?
Any hints are highly appreciated! I really need wireless daily.

I can say that Wireless works great on my T41 with SP2. I have the IBM 11/a/b/g card, and wireless worked with SP1, prior card driver and Access Connections 3.21. Wireless worked with SP2, prior card driver and Access Connections 3.21. And now it works fine with SP2, newest card driver and Access Connections 3.30. So there seems to be hope.
Consider the following approach.
Uninstall Access Connections completely including profiles (you can rebuild these).
Uninstall the Wireless Driver.
Restart.
Reinstall the Wireless Driver (make sure newest version).
Restarst.
Reinstall Access Connections 3.30.
Use Windows to tell Windows you don't want him managing the Wireless.
Fire up Access Connections and set up your first wireless configuration.
Good luck. ... JDHurst

I had a similar problem to yours in my T40p - Minus the SP2 stuff...
I installed the latest driver and it really broke the wireless and connection stuff, to the point that I couldn't even uninstall the drivers...
To solve my problem (It may help you), I installed the bigger package (The one that includes access connection, the driver, and something else I can't remember)...I think it's around 28 MB and I'm not sure if it is the latest and greatest, but, I the wireless card works again...If it ain't broken, don't fix it and I will defenetely be taking a pass on SP2 for another month or so...I've read that there are too many issues...Of course, for others it has worked perfectly...Oh, well...

SP2 crashed my computer...not recoverable!
So, I got my new T30 and decided to do all of the updates...had a HD problem first, so IBM sent me a new one....got the recovery discs going....Did Microsoft's updates (but SP1 not showing...oh well, but concerned) changed my settings to be able to input and read Japanese and then went and saw that maybe I do have SP1...just not showing on my screen do to newest update system....Found SP2 to upgrade to, so I chose that.
Seems like it took my 2 hours or so to do the whole update and install, then asked me to reboot.....came up with a continous loop of rebooting with an on-screen message of "Syntax Problem"....can't find some file." Since I didn't have the service partition I couldn't recover....reformatted and ran the restoration CD's again. I'm in the process of upgrading programs again, but am avoiding SP2 like the plague.

Hello guys, thank you for all the replies. After trying diverse things including the big package with 28MB, I still have no success. I even deinstalled the access connections completely to let WinXP fully take over the network configurates. The result is the same: I can connect to the AP over wireless but Windows informs:" limited connection or no connection." As a matter of fact I have no connection. In the end, after two days of doing nothing else but just playing with drivers, updates, restart, restart, restart and searching in the internet I found an ultimative solution. I deinstalled SP2. Now the world is in order again. I always have my personal firewall, my own anti-virus from Norton and adware. So, I think I can say SP2, no thanks!

My T30 upgraded fine, but several other computers have become screwed up with the upgrade and networking. You may try disabling the "Wireless Zero Config" service on your system.
I've had the same "limited connectivity" crap on two desktops, one with a D-link car and the other with a Linksys, both wireless. WinXP SP2 apparently doesn't like to share the sandbox with some wireless clients, but luckily I had no problems with Access Connections dying.

Version 3.53 of Access Connections
In my case, the latest update of Access Connections V3.53 seems to solve the problem with SP2. Besides, I used the Ethernet during the installation of SP2 to keep the wireless inactive while I used the wireless to install SP2 in my first post. Not sure if it's also a reason.
