Cannot get out of Rescue and Recovery

#1 Post by lutami » Mon Oct 16, 2006 2:26 pm

I've just reinstalled using the recovery discs...ones from IBM.

Followed all directions to reinstall...press F9 to select defaults...press F10 to save and exit...

System restarts in recovery mode and no matter what i do i can't get out of it.

Any ideas please.

Have you tried removing the CD from the drive, just as it goes to reboot?

Hi thanks...yes i did that...found and read a thread that suggested it when someone else had recovery problems.

I tried the recovery discs again...for some reason it let me boot from the first one although i'd set it to default before trying to exit.

I'm up and running now after another reinstall ( bangs head against brick wall ) i installed SP2 using a disc i'd been sent from M/S and froze up completely...couldn't get past the blank desktop.

I'll download it this time.

Anyway i'm leaving everything IBM on this time...just going to manually start anything i need...just had XP and only a few of the IBM apps on for nearly a year on this one...being honest it runs smoother and quicker as is...except for booting that is.

Only thing i can't work out is why i seem to have lost around 7GB of my HD....it was 40 GB

Used 7.01GB

Free 25.9GB

Capacity 32.9GB

is what it says in C preload properties? i don't know where the other 7.1GB may have gone.

Anyone else had this happen?

Do you mean the hidden partition is still there although there's nothing on it?

OK, If you reinstalled using the recovery CD's then the hidden partition was recreated. The computer reboots and then restores from the hidden partition. That is why you go through Rescue and Recovery twice.

If the hidden partition is there it does not matter if there is any data in it. It still takes up the space on the hard disk.
If it is hidden how do you know there is nothing on it?

My computer doesn't have hidden partition that is 7GB. It's only 350MB.

Something's wrong with your partition.

If you want to delete it, do the following

>Start>Control Panel>Performance and Maintenance>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Storage>Disk Management

Delete the hidden 7 GB partition.

I actually suspect that there will be the 350MB partition & then separate one. GL

I don't...all i know is that i seem to have lost 7GB somwhere!..

Thanks for the tip on the deleting the partition...will try it later...nothing to lose only the time if i have to reinstall again...worth it to learn if that's the reason.

Who knows i may gain the extra 7GB :D

The hidden partition is protected in the BIOS.
Press F1 at startup and unprotect the partition, then you can delete it.

Thicky question here...sorry

I've 'unprotected' it... by disabling pre desktop area it should be visible somewhere...it says in BIOS it should...only i can't find it...most probably simple for some but not for me i'm afraid.

When i can see it how do i go about merging/deleting.

Thanks for any help.

If you have a look at Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Storage -> Disk Management, you may find the extra space shown under Disk 0 (drive C) as unallocated space, or as space not allocated to the C:\ partition.

If you see it there, you will need some partition management software to reclaim this space.
