long pauses resuming from standby
long pauses resuming from standby
i've searched the forum but haven't found replies that i find right on yet...
X41T (1866-6TU) that i put in standby frequently, wait for the moon and all activity to stop, then close the lid.
then, about 1 out of 5 times that i open the lid, nothing happens for up to 2 minutes, usually about 30 secs. the moon goes off, but aside from that it just sits there, no fan, nothing. then it starts.
the other 4/5 times it starts promptly on opening the lid.
i keep the whole thing up to date and clean of crapware that i know of, i can't find any obvious issue, and have perused the settings and all that. maybe i'm missing something, but if so it's something well hidden.
this is not a new problem, it's been consistent for many months.
any ideas?

My X31 does the same thing, maybe one time out of ten. No idea as to why, though ...cheeebs wrote:X41T (1866-6TU) that i put in standby frequently, wait for the moon and all activity to stop, then close the lid.

Hi,
I had the same problem for quite a long time (~9 months). There are quite a few theories on this board about what causes it. I think for a while, the popular theory was something with Firefox and Flash.
None of that was true for me. The thing that helped me was to use Rescue and Recovery to reimage my harddrive, then I updated everything. After doing this, my resumes are always nearly instantaneous. Sometimes there are delays of 3 to 5 seconds, but nothing like the long delays I used to get.
I don't know why just updating through the time didn't help. Perhaps some component was updated properly?
Anyhow, my laptop is a X40 running WinXP Pro.

The "firefox + flash" theory is not just a theory: I had this problem and I solved it (consistently) by installing flashblock. It was even acknowledge by people from adobe on some bugzilla entry. It doesn't happen with explorer+flash, only firefox. I don't know if flash 9 solved it, it may have solved it.
Of course, the same behavior could be caused by other problems for other people.

Is it? A few of my friends, one is test engineer on Vista kernel, another is a PM, and other fellow geeks, concurred that it is highly improbable that a user-space application would be able to do that.
Anyhow, I suggest one day when you have too much freetime, to start fresh from RNR, and see what happens. Another possibility, is that when I did wipe my system and do an install, I installed a newer patched version of firefox or flash? <shrug> Still doubt the bug is in an userspace app.

I had a problem similar to this. I traced it to the installation of a circuit analysis program (Multisim) that had installed half a dozen new services that were network related. When the machine resumed from standby it would hang up for 60 seconds until the networking routines timed out.
Look for anything new on your machine that is related to networking. Some software is too dumb to realize that when a laptop resumes from standby the network is not immediately up and running, and this can lead to problems.

What was the problem / symptoms that you saw?
The problem the original poster, and I were suffering was that the laptop would freeze, even before the screen would turn on or the harddrive started spinning. The laptop would look like it wasn't doing anything for a while (minutes), before it started to resume into XP.

Same symptom. Upon returning from standby the screen would be dark and nothing would happen for 60 seconds. Then the machine would finally awake from standby. In my case the delay was a consistent 60 seconds which led me to suspect a networking-related problem.
