Airport security question: Syringe of Thermal Greese

#1 Post by sparta.rising » Tue Oct 17, 2006 10:31 pm

Do you think airport security would allow me to have a syringe of thermal grease with my carry on?

It probably depends on who inspects your bag. I would guess that normally, probably not. See following site for information on what you can bring.

Gonna vote no on that one. Airport security, unless they have some technical/mechanical background would be suspicious of anything even grease with a label that says grease/compound whatever in a syringe. On top of that the word "thermal" could be construed to infer heat, which could then be related to fire, which happens when things explode.

Then there's the syringe which may conjur thoughts of Heroin being injected, which infers drug use and drug smuggling. You may turn out to be labled a terrorist smuggling high explosives and heroin into the country.

Yes and no.

No, it probably would not be considered dangerous in small quantities.

Yes - why on earth would you need it (you don't service laptops in flight), so why is it not in your checked baggage? I would not put it past them to require you to check your bag because it is an unreasonable gel to be carrying on in the first instance.

You could hide it inside a  say it's a snack for later.

I think the agents would be rather suspicious of a dancing banana....probably more so than a syringe of thermal grease. :)

I'm trying not to check any baggage. I'm only visiting my parents for a few days so I dont need a big suitcase. But while I'm there I'll be swapping the CPU in their computer (with a faster one) and seeing as I have a lot of thermal paste here, I figured I'd bring what I have.

Its a small airport, I'll call them before I travel.

If it's less than 3 ounces, you put it in a 1 quart (exactly) zip lock bag, and you hand it to the TSA weenie you might just get by.

Or you could ship it out ahead of time.

I put it in a ziplock bag (even before i read that regulation), kept it in my bag, and they didnt even say anything. Which is kind of retarded because it looks like a hyperdermic needle...
