T23 slowing down and problems

#1 Post by BigWarpGuy » Wed Oct 18, 2006 3:06 pm

My T23 is slowing down. It does not always see the cdrom in the cdrom drive till four or five attempts. There is no longer sound. Are these indications that it is wearing out? Should I be looking for another Thinkpad? :?:

they would sound to me like seperate problems. The sound could be a drive issue. Slowing down could be for lots of reasons. and the cdrom could be damage to the drive.

I would recommend a reinstall of windows, along with all drivers (which can be downloaded from ibm or lenovo). and see if this solves any of the problems.

you should also try running the diagnostic check disk (i think they call it pc doctor). which can also be downloaded from ibm. althougth you will need three floppies and a floppy drive (as there is not a cd version for the T2x's)

You didn't specify whether it's failing to see the CD-ROM in the Operating System, or at boot, or both... are you seeing any error messages on boot?

This could go either way really... it could be a hardware problem, or it could be entirely software...

missing or corrupt driver for the sound, corrupted or otherwised damaged OS files could easily cause the loss of sound and the problems with intermittently accessing a drive. If all of the system diagnostics pass, I would backup all personal data and run restore/recovery CDs if you have them, if not, reinstall the OS and all drivers and go from there :)

Just my $.02

edit: dangit someone beat me to it lol

There are two CD versions available- The first involves 3 seperate CD's, and the second is just one bootable CD. Here's the link - http://www.mypchelp.com/~dsmith/ibmutil ... pcdiag.iso (Thanks to rkawakami)

thanks for that link (for myself i will keep that for furture reference). i have made a CD version work myself before using a ram drive and stuff and lots of copying in dos, but that was very complex and i wasn't sure how to advise someone to do it.

I can't claim responsibility for finding this ISO for the T2x version of PC Doctor. "Barking Perci" found it at the thinkwiki.org site.

Note: As of 1/2007, the link referenced above is dead. I have uploaded the same file to my web site. Alternate source is here:

Backup site for ISO image

I DID convert the PC Doctor version for the 600X (and others) into an ISO image and posted that on my site.

Ray, I should have stated that your post was the only one I found the link to the ISO...But dammit, you deserve as much credit as I can give you for your help around here.

Probably because I've become kind of, shall we say, prolific, in my activities here in the last few months... Original thread is:

PC Doctor

Well, thanks, but I really try to make sure that credit for any job well done is properly attributed.
