20GB of space is missing!

#1 Post by Raystream » Thu Oct 19, 2006 12:24 am

I have uninstalled quite a few of the things that shipped with my laptop. Including almost all of the IBM utitilies, Symantic products, etc. Recently I checked and saw that out of the 69GB available I only had 16GB left and 54GB used. So then I went into the C:\ drive and selected all of the folders and files and it totaled only 34GB.

Is there something that I am missing? System Restore is turned off and I can't find anything yet that explains the 20GB that are missing.

If I were you (which of course I'm not) I would be totally wiping the HDD (including the PDA) and install a special version of Windows XP SP2 that runs lighter, without all the bloatware Lenovo T60 ships and then install the utilities I need.
My T41p run like hell, without the things I do not need.
Pagefile usage when Windows is only installed is about 60MB!
Current
T440p:

Actually... this is weird... I just found out that the missing space was reserved space from Backup utility! Just deleted the scheduled backups reserved space after viewing the current backups. Jeesh.. after all of this time!

Did you check on the hidden partition?

Think I also got this problem... Took 12GB right out of my space..

How did you delete the scheduled back up reserved space?

Use Resue and Recovery's Exclude function and single instance storage function to shrink the backup size....

Also, while benottomex could get away with a fresh install of XP for a T41p, I would not recommend it for a T60. OS is too old for the hardware, it needs lots of patches beyond SP2 or what Windows update provides. Some of these are on the driver matrix page, at the bottom.

Hey JohnDrake.

I also wanted to follow benottomexs advice and reinstall windows
on my T60, until I've read your post.

But as my english is not the best, I'm not sure whether I've
understood you correctly:

-> "Some of these are on the driver matrix page, at the bottom."
You mean some of the newer drivers that the T60s need but which
arent supplied with the old/standard winxp sp2 versions are available
on the driver "matrix"(?) page of microsoft ?
(If yes, can you give me the link *g*)

Thanks

There's no need to reinstall anything. It's just space stolen by Rescue and Recovery backup. I use True Image so I migrated the backups to offline storage and disabled the scheduled backup.

At this point in history there are too many updates and tweaks to factory installed WinXP to make Vanilla reinstalls feasible. One is usually better off starting with the recovery partition and updating from there.

I dislike the linking of R&R with other functionality. If you don't want to use it it should be easily removed with no complications and no relation to CSS.
T'Pad 600e, 770x, A20p, A21p, A30p, A31p (2653-H3U), T43p (2668-Q2U) & T60p (2623-DDU)...it's an addiction.

Hi,i've also got 8Gb on drive C missing, i thought that space was stolen by Rescue and Recovery, so i checked the Rescue and Recovery and tried to delete some backups, but it said that i haven't got any backups. How to disable Rescue and Recovery's backup function and how can i get my 8Gb space back? Please give me some guides. Thanks
