Are there any X series with a serial port?

#1 Post by plukke » Thu Oct 19, 2006 12:33 pm

Hi

I'm looking for a small and light subnotebook. Do need a serial port very often tough and wasn't planning on traveling with a port replicator or docking of some sort. I couldn't find any that are equipped with a serial port, the smallest is a 14,1" T thinkpad.

So, are there any X series equipped with a serial port?

Sorry, but no Thinkpad X-series has a serial port. You need to use a port replicator or a docking station to have access to a serial port.

Bummer, beeing a student involved with loads of older equipment I need one well, all the time. Might opt for a 14,1" T series than..... :(

For about $20 you can buy a USB-to-serial adapter. I have one on my X31, and it works great to configure routers etc that have a serial port ...

I am aware of that but I don´t like the hassle with them. When you need a serial port well, three times a day it gets annoying soon enough.

Have a R50e at the moment, with that converter but it´s just too big and I think the convertor is somewhat annoying....

If you need it three times a day, then, yes, I agree. I use it maybe every three weeks. On the other hand, an X-series with the serial dongle is still much lighter than a T-series ...

If you just need a small and portable laptop for running light CPU load tasks, then ThinkPad 240/240x would be handy. I have 4 TP240 and 2 TP240x with built-in wireless and the thing that make them crucial is that they all come with the serial and parallel ports for connecting equitments and network device administration purposes.

Too bad, the 240 is not a real option. I need some decent CPU power too. Wierd that IBM never thought of the many network admins that like a small and portable notebook such as the X series. Why isn't there a serial port included?
