Who is using Internet Explorer 7 ?

Now that MS Internet Explorer 7 is complete and available, has anyone out there tried it?

Anyone plan on using it? It will be part of Miscrosoft Update very soon.

OR if not using IE 7, what is your favorite browser and why?

Share your thoughts and experiences.

I downloaded and installed yesterday. I think it is much better than version 6. it looks very much like Firefox which is my main browser.

I will stick with Firefox due to the adblock features and about 6 other extensions that I use daily. But I might use IE7 when I need to use two browsers--ie, I need to check two gmail accounts simultaneously.

I assume IE7 will be somewhat similar to what came in Vista beta. From what I saw in Vista beta, it still doesn't cut it with me.

I've used IE6, Netscape 7.2, Firefox (1.5?), and Opera 8.54 and 9.02. My vote goes to Opera.

1. Most pages that are too wide can be shrunk to fit window width with one click.
2. There is a search box for searching within a web page for text. I searches as you type and has Find next.
3. Zoom images works very well.
4. I like the tabbed browsing feature.
5. Has wand for remembering user ID's and passwords - if you want it to.
6. Can delete all or selected types of private data with a couple of clicks.
7. Widgets are supported in version 9.xx - although I have not used them.
8. There are other customizations that can be made if desired.
9. Works out of the box without downloading a bunch of extensions.
10. More professional appearance than Firefox or IE6 IMHO.

There are a handful of sites that give Opera problems, but not many. For those sites I use Netscape 7.2 or IE6. I keep Netscape mainly because I still use it as my email client. I had Firefox for awhile, but I no longer have it on my hard drive.

I have the production version of IE7 working in an XP virtual machine. So far, it seems fine. The Beta version of IE7 that came with Vista did not work well at all. I don't know whether that was a Vista problem (which continue to be legion) or an Explorer problem.

Further notes:
It is impossible to get rid of the search bar. I don't need it; I don't want it; and here we go again. Microsoft is building tools for the lowest common denominator.

Big icons for forward and back. Fisher-Price all the way and no way to get rid of them.

Tabs work. Forward and Back buttons at least work (did not in Vista, so that makes it a Vista problem).

It is impossible to get rid of the Favourites Stars - Another Fisher-Price eye candy thing.

I would like to get rid of the search bar and put the menu bar up there. That would same one large line of screen real estate and provide more room for browsing.

It works, and it is OK, but IE 6 is smarter and snappier. And if Tabs is the only news story in IE 7, I can leave those behind.

Agreed. In respect to the search bar, you can't get rid of it in firefox either, right?

You can in the current Release Candidate if you right click between it and the address bar, click on customise and then drag the search bar into the box that comes up.

I've always hidden the search bar from day one. I just use the address bar in combination with QuickSearch commands which I've created. "g" for google, "w" for wikipedia, "am" for amazon music, etc...

There's no need for a separate search bar to take up screen real estate, as long as you don't mind typing the QuickSearch abbreviation.

Even with the google bar there, I still always type google into the address bar...old habits.

Oh my..... If I could only find the search bar...

just kidding ....

I have found that even on the earlier version of Firefox if you reduce the size of the window just a bit from full screen, then click on the toolbar area, choose customize and then drag it up and onto the desktop, it goes away.

Exactly. I had a broken IE7 beta install that I was unable to repair, so I have been Firefox-only for quite a long time. And happy for the most part ...

Now when IE7 final release came out, I installed it, and got my IE functional again -- which is very much of a good thing when I can't get a VPN connection and need to use Outlook Web Access (which has much better functionality with IE than with Firefox). And the Windows-integrated authentication is definitely nice when accessing corporate intranet sites etc.

IE7 certainly shows the Vista/Office 2007 influence, and one can consider that to be either better or worse based on personal preferences. However, one nice thing is the concept of security zones, which Firefox doesn't really have as such (maybe Opera has, but I don't feel like trying yet another browser ... too many over the years!). On the other hand, it doesn't have the level of customizability or extensibility of Firefox.

So use the one that fits your needs -- that's the great thing about choice. Or, since both are free, and disk space nearly so, get them both and use each one for what it's best-suited for.

I have IE 7 now running on my home IBM Desktop to give it a fair trial. I will keep IE 6 on my laptop for a week or so. I got rid of as much eye candy as I could. ... JD Hurst

I downloaded the betas of IE7 and toyed around with it for awhile. Then I discovered that it really didn't add anything new and I had better browsers in the likes of Opera and Firefox. In addition, I managed to discover a rather large list of software, which happens to include SU2, that gets broken because of IE7. As if that wasn't enough, there was no easy way to uninstall my image of IE7 beta. That isn't my idea of a good web experience.

thinking of installing and testing it alongside firefox, im not sure if i have a memory leak in FF or one of the extensions, but it seems to take an age to start up.

I think there's a preference for IE and feeds over Firefox.

I tried Firefox RC2 hoping that it wouldn't leak as much memory as the last version of Firefox I had, but it did. 1 minute after startup it was using near 50MB for just 3 tabs of simple web pages while Opera, which had been on non-stop throughout the day, was only using 30MB maximum for over 15 tabs. This was with no extensions as well.

only been playing around with it recently, one annoyance i've come across which i dont like..

when closing multiple tabs, theres a option to reopen those tabs when IE is next opened, which im all for but im not a fan of the way IE opens another instance of the home page.

for example i have www.google.co.uk and www.yahoo.com open and www.msn.co.uk is my home page. i have all 3 tabs open, when i close IE it asks and i say yes i want these reopened..

when i reopen it, those 3 come back as expected but IE in its infinite wisdom decides to open another msn page tab.

why is this? and how'd i stop this?

IE7 always opens all the home pages -- and optionally the saved tabs -- when starting. One possibility is not to have a home page at all tp avoid getting the extra tab ...

I am not an IE user, but if it's like version 6, go to Tools > Internet Options..., and on the General tab, choose Use Blank for the Home Page. Then just set up a bookmark - excuse me Favorite for your Home Page. When IE opens, it will open without loading any pages loaded unless you tell it to.

tried deleting the home page in options, it always defaults to what it previously was.

then it'll open up a new "about:blank" page every time i reopen IE.

i want something that works like the "session manager" extension i'm using with firefox: when i close FF (or it crashes), it remembers what tabs i had open, the next time i open FF, it opens just those tabs and not an extra home page.

I've been using IE7 from Beta 1 through to release and it's worked fine for me apart froma couple of web pages that don't work quite right (but there are workarounds). Basically, I use it like I use IE6, except with tabbed browsing.

The installation of IE7 final will automatically uninstall any previous beta/rc. So i didn't manually uninstall the rc before starting the installation, but i guess the result will be the same either way.

Yeah, I htink I have Firefox 2.0 RC2 and the memory usage is HORRIBLE!! (Like 100mb memory for like 6 tabs, it's disgusting).

IE7 is nice, but it's still loads slower than FireFox.

No to Opera 'cause its full version ain't free.

Netscape is all right, but it's bloaty.

Yes, I realized that when I posted it. What I was trying to say is save your home page as a favorite, then click on the favorite to launch. Yes, it takes a couple of more clicks.

A better solution yet is to give up on IE and use Opera for your daily browsing.
