Can Vista and Linux xgl 3D desktop run on
950
or
64MB ATI Mobility Radeon X1300
or
128MB ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 HyperMemory
Other than the support for these eye candies, I see no need to buy a an advanced graphic card since I rarely play games or do other graphic-intensive work.
So if 950 can support them, I see no need in purchasing other cards.
Does Integrated Graphics 950 support the eye candy of vista?

• 2006 Once the irascible owner of T43P --Returned
• 2007 Overheating HP dv2000t | C2duo 7200 |Nvidia 7200|1.5GB|80 GB|14.1" Brightview|1.3MP webcam
• 2012 X220 All good except for the sticky keys. Keyboard replaced
• Considering a T530 or X230T now

I was in the same situation as you when it came to which ThinkPad to buy. I was perfectly happy with the idea of a GMA950 if it wasn't for one thing -- DVI ports on the docking stations don't work with the GMA graphics, you need a discrete graphics chipset to drive them. (Unfortunately -- at the time -- this meant I needed to buy the larger 15.4" Z61m rather than the lighter 14" Z61t, but in the end the higher resolution screen turned out well worth the weight penalty)
I have run Aero Glass on my Z61m (1680x1050 panel) with the 64MB Mobility Radeon X1300. The graphic "user experience score" Vista give it was 3.1.
HyperMemory worked both in Vista and XP (yes, the X1300 supports it too). Running Aero Glass, I noticed that it only ever took 4MB or so of my main memory.. I was afraid that it might snatch a lot more than that.
I have heard of others getting Aero Glass going on the GMA950, but the driver isn't automatically detected and installed. You need to manually select an "Intel Lakeport" (or similar sounding name?) graphics driver from a control panel somewhere.
