Cleaning Question

#1 Post by crabchip » Thu Aug 26, 2004 11:04 pm

My IBM T30 is about 1.5 years old now, it's my first laptop that I've owned myself. I've had others from companies I've worked for. I have no complaints with it except for the pre installed phone home crap. But that's not the point of my question. I'll put another out for that.

Having been dealing with systems for companies where sometimes it is and sometimes it's not my problem, and my own systems built myself for over 15 years, that are my problem, I've seen some pretty dirty systems.

I've also seen that it's usually the power supply that goes first. And the fans collect some nasty stuff.

I've learned that when possible to take them apart once a year to blow off the dust, basically clean the thing out, especially in NYC. Other than freaky easily replaceable power supplies, no system has ever failed on me. But that's desktop machines, and this laptop's power supply isn't easily replaceable.

Is there some documented way to for instance clean the fan(s), that is blow out the dust etc, that I know I'll see if I open my T30? I don't want to destroy it, I just want to blow out the dust and other material which I know has collected in there over the past year and a half.

I did receive some weird fan error about a month ago on a reboot. I don't consider it a big deal at the moment, but cleaning the thing out can't hurt.

So in summary, my question is, how do I blow out dust, hairs and other assorted crap from my T30 laptop?

No [censored], I should blow the air where? Into the computer?

The question is, how to properly take apart the computer so that I can blow crap away from the computer and out of the fan area.

k?

There are some nice videos on IBMs site to remove the palm rest and keyboard. Plus the screws are marked on the bottom. I would just lightly take it apart to blow it out, that way the crap doesnt collect on the inside.

Follow the Hardware Maintenance Manual's instructions on how to take your TP apart, or just check out this site for movies and instructions. Basically you just need to remove the keyboard and palm rest.
