A31 - special RAM requirements? Bad RAM?

I have tried installing a 512MB SODIMM in my A31 and am getting boatloads of errors when running memtest86. As well, a BSOD is received most of the time when WinXP is starting.

I have also tried this RAM in a T40, with the same results.

The RAM is PC2700 CL2.5 - Is there some special requirement that makes this RAM unsuitable for use with these thinkpads, or do I just have a bad stick of RAM?
