I have an X20 2662-39U w/ultrabay. I have recovered the system to OEM, updated all drivers & software through Lenovo website and W2K through MS. I get a code 10 "This device cannot start" error for sound.
I also have a couple questions about X20's capabilities:
The X20 has a flashcard port. What is this used for?
At the top edge of the screen there is a cover over a connector. Is this for a camera? If so, on this older machine, is the camera worth purchasing and playing with?
I have many more general questions about my newly acquired notebook.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Hi there. Some suggestions about the sound issue. Maybe you could try to uninstall the device from device manager and then reboot. Try to get a fresh copy of the driver, since the current driver might be corrupted.
Regarding the flash port, if you are referring to the small port (not the PCMCIA port), that should be for a Compact Flash card. Pretty neat.
As for the connector on top of the LCD, that is called an UltraPort connector. IBM released several accessories for that port. Amongst them: A microphone array, an infrared port, and a webcam. You can find them in eBay from time to time. By the way, the X20 (and the X21) don't have builtin infrared, which starting with the X22 was builtin.
Enjoy your new computer.

X20 thanks for the reply
As to the flashport; what kind of card does it take? Is it just a reader? What can it be used for? Can it be used like a PCMCIA to add things like a sound card or other add-ins.
As to the sound card and drivers, i have uninstalled and reinstalled several times, to no avail. Is the sound card imbedded on the system board? If the sound card is in fact broken, could it not be replaced? Is there a way to add a sound card?
To be honest, if i can't get the sound to function, i am going to re-sell the x20 and buy another thinkpad that has full functionality, but i'd really like to get this one going as it is just the size i was looking for and it only cost me $190 off ebay.

The flash port takes CF cards. The most common use of this is for memory (either CF flash ram cards, such as SanDisk), or for a microdrive. Yes, you can put a microdrive in there, and boast to your friends that your X20 has two hard drives. But you won't be able to boot from the microdrive unfortunately.JohnK wrote:As to the flashport; what kind of card does it take? Is it just a reader? What can it be used for? Another uses for the CF port include: Wireless cards, ethernet cards, modem cards, and perhaps more things that I can't think of.
I don't know what to tell you about the soundcard. You most likely have checked that the volume is up and the sound is not muted. Other than that and problems with the drivers, there is a possibility that the speaker itself or the cable running to the speaker is broken. Can you listen anything with headphones hooked on?
Also, try to record something and see if you see a waveform in Media Player. That would discount a serious problem with the soundcard in my opinion.
Good luck and let us know if you get it to work.
EDIT: I forgot to say that the CF port can not only read, but also write
