I spilt a half a bottle of V onto my baby


as soon as i got home - took it apart and wiped the excess. and have every few days been trying to do a clean with water under the keyboard - as due to the sugar levels, it crystalized

doesn't sound pretty - i know.

i am willing to pay several hundred dollars for a 'pro' to clean it THOROUGHLY.

anyone know a lenovo centre in Sydney that would take the job?

this is a brand new [several months] laptop - so i dont think its good i let it keep going like this.

so as i said - i'm willing to have it cleaned from the ground up - and pay for it.

who do i take it to in Sydney - Australia?

Why don't you just order a spare keyboard from Lenovo and replace your old one. Nothing more simple than that.

although - how do i clean the LCD cable? and the two hinges?


when i open my beautiful black baby [i like my laptop, hence [censored] off about spilling V on it], it makes a creaking noise. From what i can tell its the LCD cable, and i want to have the hinges cleaned just for safe keeping - incase some got inside, and will show it self in the years to come.

But on a more serious note, you can always disassemble the laptop, take the lcd out, and clean it yourself.

Though I see your logic behind getting someone who know's what they are doing

I would take it in and have a professional do it. You don't want to screw up your warranty. Although,... you may have already done that the second you spilled that. Arent the new Thinkpads supposed to have "spill resistant" keyboards?

the keyboards are spill proof, but he's more concerned with the whole crystalised mess thing I think.

Its almost impossible to get rid of once its there without a good hard scrub, and electronic devices dont like good hard scrubbing action.

They have had them for awhile now; there is a little hole that serves as a drain port that leads to the bottom of the Thinkpad (2 of them on some Thinkpads). The surface is also fairly resistent to adhesion from liquids. There are specs on the max flow rate each drain can handle, but I forget them now. There is a fairly dramatic picture of it showing a laminar stream of water flowing out through it.

it isn't about the spill proof keyboard, it worked - all of the drink went to the bottom of the computer.

although some inevidably ended up under the keyboard and in the lcd mounting cable.

any ideas who can clean this?

you need to open up the thinkpad and clean it. Just remember what you have opened, how you open the thinkpad, how many screws you have opened and etc...

very easy to open and close back the thinkpad. Just remember not to break anything will do .

After opening the thinkpad, use detergent mixed with water and rinse a cloth over the mixture and use that piece of cloth to wipe the excess spillage from the cable and under the keyboard.

Don't forget to complete discharge the power on the system first.
Remove any AC adapter and battery power on the system before cleaning it.

i've attempted to open it - my problem was getting the undercarriage off.

i need to get to taking the lcd either off - or at least have FULL view of the cable that leads to it

same goes for the two hinges that hold the screen

Yup, after clicking it, look for the part that describes the HMM (Hardware Maintenance Manual). That should explain how to take apart and reassemable the T60 correctly.

they[ibm/lenovo] should have prices associated with each part - so you know how much its costing you once you screw up - and add to that labour of $90 dollars an hour - that's how much a chap in Sydney wanted to charge...

Well on the upside, your computer's not completely fried. Good to know that the keyboards indeed are spill-resistant.

all done

there was SOOO much sticky residue from the sugar on the inside.

the worst was the driveBay - the bit that ejects a drive/battery - was nearly glued to the case.

anyway - i took some detergent and water, a toothbrush, and a small towelette - and went to work.

i wiped everything and anything that was in the case and was sticky [quite a few things]. took the better half of 3 hours.

also a big portion was noted around the heatsink - and most likely due to the heat, it started to crystalize around it.

good thing - is it's done.

adding alcohol to the water and very small amount of good dish soap (joy) will help the H2o to evaporate faster..

i would get a new keyboard as they are pretty cheap..

the rest seems to be just cleaning out the sugars..

i would take it to a local service center to have it blessed and thus not void the warranty..
