I used to have a Tecra 8100, and while the trackpoint wasn't as good as IBM's, I never had the problem that you mention. If you wouldn't mind doing so, try to boot from a LiveCD Linux distribution such as Knoppix or Slax. Even if you haven't done this before, it is really easy.
If you get your mouse to work correctly from within Linux, that discounts any hardware problems, so then you cut your work in half to try and find the source of the problem. You could also try to see if an external mouse has the same problems.

As for possible fixes, I suppose you can always hook up an external mouse and learn to live with it. Or, you can replace the keyboard (if you can find a part for it, and if it can be done). Unfortunately, not all laptops are as easy to work on as a Thinkpad, so I don't know if this would be practical or feasible at all.

This is not a Toshiba forum, and I don't believe I've ever even used one. Here's the support page:

I would bet it's not a bios issue. If there's a cable to the mouse device, check the connector. There may be some obscure driver or setup utility

Well, this might not be a Toshiba forum, but it isn't a car forum either

The OP is right in posting this on the Off Topic Stuff section.

To the OP: Yes, Slax (and all other LiveCD distributions) can be downloaded for free. What you do basically is download an ISO image, and burn a CD rom with that image (use Nero or DirectCD for example). Then, boot your laptop with the CD inside the tray, making sure that the boot options in the BIOS are set to boot from the CD/DVD first.

As far as it being a BIOS setup, I really doubt it.

Really sounds like a hardware issue. Ask Iris though, I used to use that when I had my satellite. I kind of liked that one, it was my second work laptop, after a 380ED :)

Can you adjust anything about it at all through the windows mouse settings, slow it down, speed it up etc?
